Why People HATE Longboarders...

For people who don't skate (or are new to skating), it can come as a surprise to learn that skateboarders don't like longboarders. Even though I don't personally have a problem with longboarding, I've heard a lot of other skaters complain about it, so I feel like I have a good perspective on it. In this video, we go over why skaters hate longboarders.

Tell a longboarder to do skateboarding tricks and they probably couldn't do it. Tell a skateboarder to bomb a hill going over 50mph and they probably couldn't do it.

This whole list is just "skateboarders" gatekeeping and being super judgmental. I do both and it's super toxic to sperate the community like this.

By this point these skateboarders would just hate everything

I hate the mindset that we can’t all just be part of a bigger community. Skateboarders act like it’s an exclusive club that you can only get into when you “earn your stripes” but by gatekeeping all you’re doing is making it harder for your community to grow and giving it a bad reputation.
There are plenty of good points in this video, like hating on posers who only get into longboarding for the aesthetic, but at the end of the day, everyone is trying to just have fun. Let everyone have their own brand of fun, and if you see some poser newbie struggling on a longboard, help them out instead of pointing at them and insulting them for not being “cool/good enough.”
This toxic gatekeeping mindset helps nobody and all it does is inflate egos. Skateboarding is VERY difficult, but it won’t grow if we push everyone who’s interested away.
Personally I love riding both and don’t see why I need to choose! Just riding any board is fun for me :)

As a new person to the community, these kinds of videos make me really sad because of how tight in a sad way skateboarding is. BUT happy because I can see something that I can do better on.

This video makes skaters sound like pretentious nerds.... lol

Imagine how childish you would have to be to hate on someone because they can’t do a “trick” lol

"There are only so many variations of powerslides you can do, and even if you are the sort of longboarder who puts in the time and effort to learn to do tricks, eventually you'll reach a limit ... It just makes sense to put that effort towards something else"

I'm totally going to go to the skatepark and start telling skaters they should really get into software development

Im a longboarder, I used to skate and still can. the reason i prefer longboarding just cuz i find it very enjoyable to just cruise around, and yes it is easier then skateboarding but thats also an up side for me. Its relatively relaxing to me.

I have noticed that skaters hate longboarders but there is practically no hate to skaters in the longboarding scene, if anything there is really only respect

Different mentality. I used to skate as a kid. Liked doing tricks and it was a blast. Loved pushing and challenging myself. Put it down for several years once college started. Recently rediscovered my love for being on a board. But I realized my mentality had changed. I don't care about tricks anymore. I just love the ride. To cruise. Put head phones on and explore. Maybe bomb some hills for a bit of an adrenaline rush but for the most part just relax and enjoy. That's kinda hard on a regular board. There's a huge difference between a standard 54mm skateboard wheel and the 85mm wheels I'm rocking on my board now in terms of ride quality, shear speed, and momentum. It's not even close. And yes I do use it as a means of transport and I think that's a perfectly valid reason. It's a great fun clean method of alternative transport. Skaters just need to accept that longboarders just don't have the same priorities that they do or care about the same things. Just live and let live brother

Longboards actually came first. Surfers in California wanted to have something to do when the waves were dull. So they just made a surfboard with wheels. This shortly evolved to skateboards as making them shorter was better for tricks. When people figured out that you could jump with them, it opened up a whole new avenue and skateboarding started to become it's own extremely popular sport. In other words, a skateboard is to a surfboard, what a motorcycle is to a car. Both came from the same place, but one evolved from the other and went in a completely new direction. Longboards are just surfbords on land, they're meant replicate the feeling of surfing. However, longboarding too evolved into it's own sports. The 2 main ones are downhill and freeriding. Both of these are extremely different compared to skating and surfing and they deserve their own respect. There's also longboard dancing which is relatively new and modern.

longboards are more flow based than skate boarding when it comes to tricks, so the more impressive longboarders are those who can make tricks conect like a dance, and that's why I moved to freestyle longboarding

I love grapes, and so do all my friends. We are all so annoyed with blueberries though. Blueberries, even when compared to purple grapes, don’t taste anything like grapes. 100% of the time they have a “blueberry” flavor… and that is lame. They don’t even grow on a vine. Try making grape juice with blueberries. 10 times out of 10, you can’t.

I got into long boarding later on in my teen years. My neighborhoods streets were really bumpy and riddled with pebbles and debris and I wound up hurting myself a lot on my cheap skateboard because of it. It also didn’t help I was trying to learn how to skate at the time as well. I was an avid biker but I wanted something more casual for cruising around. I remember the incident where I decided to switch. I was getting really decent at just going fast at this point, I was never interested in trucks because I didn’t care about impressing people I just liked the motion, my wheel hit the tiniest pebble and bucked me off. Of course with my luck this was right in-front of a pile of broken beer bottles and shards of glass my neighbor had thrown in the street. I tucked and rolled to protect my face but long story short I spent the night picking glass out of my back and arms. I decided I needed something heftier with thicker wheels and got a long board. It was immediately a better experience for me and exactly what I wanted from skating. Simple cruising while I listened to my music. And yes the tricks on long boarding are stupid but they are easy for people to pick up on and just fun to do. I haven’t been boarding in years but I remember my time doing it fondly. My main hobby has always been bass playing and after we moved I just sorta stopped. This video made me want to get back on my old board though lol

This was very interesting to watch as a longboarder. I have tried going to skate parks a few times, and I can tell longboards REALLY just don't belong there in my community. So I stick to nice parking lots and streets. TBH, I don't really like skateboarders... they've never been hospitable to me or my sister, who also longboards. I don't care that you don't like my board; you don't have to be rude lol

You make us sound like pretentious whiners. We skate bro. I've been skating for 23 years and never actually thought about bmx'ers, rollerbladers, or longboarders. Scooter kids on the other hand...

Here is a hot take: Any longboarder who is somewhat commited to using it as a mode of transport probably masters the basics of pushing, carving and footbraking much better than regular skaters.

Before I even clicked this video this argument about longboarders being hated by skaters made ZERO sense to me. I'm the only guy ripping bowls in my surrounding parks and not once has any skateboarder given me anything less than respect.
