THE STARGATE is one of the greatest conceits in modern science fiction: a piece of ancient technology that, when unlocked, can instantly transport you to another world. The television franchise has explore this idea in many different ways ... and with many different types of Stargates.

In this video we're running down the three different models of Stargate – the red-chevron Milky Way gates, the blue-chevron Pegasus Galaxy gates, and the white-chevron gates of Destiny and the seed ships that are on course ahead of it. PLUS: Eagle-eyed fans will know that there are three other models of Stargates that have appeared on screen so far.

Which gate is your favorite?

STAY TUNED for future videos about the Stargate, in which we explore wormhole physics, the functionality of the Stargate network, and what happens when the Stargate malfunctions.

The Pegagus gates have the favourite look to me. But I admit the manual dialing backup feature of the Milky Way gates is pretty useful. It's one of those 'never need it till you need it, but when you need it, BOY do you need it.'

Worked on original Stargate and on Atlantis. The level of detail in the Stargate prop was astounding. You could put your nose up to the surface and see texture. A lot of love was put into one thing, that they knew was going to be important. Clean wiring for the embedded lights. Some were rigged to do mechanical action. Superb craftmanship all around.

"Orlin's ability to MacGyver his own gate in a pinch..." Oh, you clever bastard...

For me, the idea of a gate "mechanical" is more attractive. The spin, the chevron lock... Everything seems more practical. You can even activate one manually. It reminds me the fact i have some tools build 30 years ago, still useful, and you have nowadays iphone who broke when you sneeze... So yes, for me, the Milky Way gates are the best, for so many reasons.

You can see the technological evolution in the gates:
1. Universe gates: the full dialing logic necessary to compute a wormhole trajectory is (probably) in the pedestal. The crystals in the gate itself store partial dialing data, the dialing remote only tells the gate which segments to read but the gate itself still has to rotate those segments into the pedestal. (The Destiny gate is the exception where the mechanism reading this data is most likely in the orb on top.)
2. Milky Way gates: more robust and powerful, they can handle a much bigger power load, but initially they probably worked the same way: crystals in the inner ring stored the partial dialing data, a dialing remote told the gate which ones to read, the mechanism to read the data was in the top chevron, the wormhole trajectory computation circuits were in the outer ring.
3. DHDs: some time after the Milky Way gates were deployed, the Ancients invented a more compact way of storing data and smaller computers for calculating the wormhole trajectories. They built the DHDs that duplicated the dialing circuits in the gates, pushed a software update to the gates that allowed them to accept wormhole trajectory data from an outside source, and supplied the MW gates with DHDs. Of course they didn't bother replacing the gates themselves, because they worked perfectly fine with the DHDs, and if it ain't broke...
4. Pegasus gates: by the time the Ancients have gotten around to replacing the temporary gates (probably Universe-style) in the Pegasus galaxy with permanent ones, the DHD was a mature technology in use for millions of years. Which is why they used a newer (and probably somewhat cheaper) version that had no circuits for the trajectory calculation and could only work with an external dialing computer (either in the DHDs, the Atlantis main computer, or the PJs).

I'm not even a Stargate fan really, but there's no denying these designs are really cool. Makes me wanna go back and watch all the shows

When I first saw it, I immediately loved Atlantis' gate. Looked so sleek and modern and, as the narrator said, "digital". I also never thought about describing Destiny's gates as "steampunk", an interesting way to put it.

The Destiny gate was my favorite. In fact, I loved everything about SG Universe.

The Gate I'm looking forward to is the Gate built by the Tauri.

I remembered most of them, I love Orlin's gate as its small and McGuyvered into existence. Though the Milkyway gate is by far the best in my opinion. The way that it can be easily powered by something else and dialed by hand can be a literal life saver

I still feel bummed out that SG: Universe was canceled just as it was getting started. For me, the original Milkey Way stargates are my favorite.

Pegasus gates are my favorite. Something about that digital dialing and blue color is very appealing.

To be honest, my favorite will always be the classic one from SG-1. Yes! Call me old fashioned but it’s more aesthetically pleasing and let us be honest! Which one comes to your mind when someone mentions Stargate? However, I lowkey like the one they use in Atlantis since it has the color blue (my fav color)

I like to imagine that the reason why the Destiny gates have a radically different glyph system is because while the Pegasus and Milky Way gates were based upon a system of location with each combination unique to the location, the Destiny Morse Code-style was a scientific/general subject system that had a set of dashes and dots to represent certain dangers, resources and other information that streamlined the evaluation of planets that were safe to walk on while the Lantean crew focused on deciphering the Big Bang Message.

I don't even want a new show at this point, I'd simply like them to continue the Universe story as I think the resolution in the comics was a little weak and too contrived. If you haven't read them, Ancients had been in suspended animation on Destiny for an unknown amount of time and suddenly were woken while Eli was trying to fix the last pod and then proceeded to fix every problem on the ship, making it like new.

The Atlantis gates are definitely my favorite. I love the blue color scheme, and the lights spinning around are a great nod to the milky way gates. XD

I always assumed the milky way gates were originally designed to rotate, and then the dhds were invented at a later time and rotating wasnt necessary any more. Then the pegasus gates were built after dhds existed and and didnt even have the primitive rotating

A video about Stargates :) Thank you so much.
I had seen stargate universe a long time back and vaguely remembered its stargate info, this video made me realize I need a proper HD recap/rerun.
Stargate tech is shown in an awesome and innovative way, in the next season, I want a complete type of gate hyper-digital but having analog capabilities as well, that could create a lot of opportunities for stories, surrounding gate technology.
