3 Reasons the A7IV is better than the FX3 #sonycamera #fx3 #a7iv

Is the A7IV better than the FX3?!The answer is…. Objectively no. and subjectively… yes. So I need every camera tech boy or girl to calm yourselves and rest assured that my head is not completely buried in the sand. Let me explain. The FX3 is an amazing small form factor cinema camera from Sony Alpha. The colours look incredible, it has uncropped 4K 60fps and 120fps (a regular and major critique of the Sony A7IV), and - the main reason I purchased it - it’s the lowlight king of cameras. The reason I bought the FX3 is that I needed a camera that could handle low light situations better than the A7IV, because lets be honest, when shooting at night or in dark indoor environments, the A7IV wasn’t the ideal camera. But the FX3’s dual base ISO of 640 and 12,800 is impressive to say the least and knocks it out of the park when it comes to low-light filming. So why am I saying that the A7IV is “subjectively” a better video camera than the FX3? Because I think for someone who regularly operates as a “Run-and-gun”, hybrid photographer/videographer, speed matters. What I love so much about the Sony A7IV is that it’s a camera that allows you to do everything very very fast. The design of the dials that allow you to switch between photo and video and 3 memory mode settings is just a lot faster than the FX3. Not only that, but the design of the A7IV invites you to change your settings more from an eye level position, whereas the ergonomic design of the FX3 focuses more on waste-level. As someone who will regularly use gimbals, some of the placement of the buttons and dials of the FX3 slows me down on production days. The FX3 feels like a camera for thoughtful, pre-emptive videographers, and as someone who works primarily in the event space, I favour a camera that is more reactionary in design. I love that I can use Super 35 mode to get 2 focal lengths out of a lens due to the larger sensor size as it saves me time changing to a different lens. and I could go on and on. Basically the FX3 is the perfect camera for the thoughtful, planning cinematographer. But the A7IV truly is the perfect camera for the run-and-gun videographer who operates in a space where things are constantly changing. Let me know your thoughts, do you like the FX3 or the A7IV better?
