I completely have been feeling this pain. Thank you for making this video because YouTube will listen to you because you have a powerful channel. Thank you for voicing this. My work around in the short term has been to try to come up with a piece where I'll have text on the screen during the short and know that that might be my thumbnail. My most recent one has my head exploding for 🤯 mind-blown and text on screen that act as a thumbnail.

To make a thumbnail simply have the thumbnail pop up for a split second at the end of the short and then select the end frame. Edit: Vid iq has now made a short about this and has extended my idea.

Very simple solution: add your title page as the first frame in your video editor

Completely agree with you bro. When you upload your videos from your phone to be able to set thumbnails, you lose video quality because even though my videos are 4K, it still shows HD. If you use your pc to upload your videos for 4K quality, you lose the ability for setting thumbnails. It’s really annoying.

My cumbersome workaround. Edit on computer add thumbnail with graphics to beginning, transfer to phone, on phone create short, select first frame as thumbnail. To avoid brefly showing the thumbnail frame during video which van be a bit annoing for repeat views it works to use the youtube editor and cut the frame out after uploading (havent seen anyone mention that part). Ofc would be nice to avoid all that work

I think it’s okay not to have custom thumbnails on shorts as I tend to have a extreme hard time creating thumbnails for YouTube on long form content.

The main thing I have against shorts having custom thumbnails is that the ratio will look wonky & weird especially compared to what we're use to seeing

what you can do is, the first or last frame is the thumbnail and pick that frame but carry on with the video

I remembered being able to add custom thumbnails to shorts when I first started my channel, and when YouTube took away that ability it really made me upset.

I would understand YouTube taking away this feature if they had a good reason, but they don’t. The reason they described is false.

Fingers crossed that YouTube will one day give this ability back to us.🤞

I would like to pick a frame, on PC. I have uploaded a few shorts that is shows things like the ground or a wall or something that is zero I want to click on that.
