We'll look at what blood pressure really means and the difference between systolic blood pressure and diastolic. We will also learn about when we have low blood pressure (hypotension) and when it is too high (hypertension). In the end, we'll discuss why high blood pressure can be so harmful to your health.

To put it simply, your blood pressure is the pressure exerted on the walls of your blood vessels by your blood - which is being pumped by your heart. Blood pressure is usually is recorded with 2 numbers. The systolic pressure (higher number) is the force at which your heart pumps blood around your body. The diastolic pressure (lower number) is your blood pressure when your heart muscle is between beats and relaxed. They're both measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg).

In the UK high blood pressure (hypertension) is considered to be 140/90mmHg or higher (or 150/90mmHg or higher if you're over the age of 80). Blood pressure is considered to be normal between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg. Low blood pressure is considered to below 90/60. When your blood pressure readings are between 120/80mmHg and 140/90mmHg could mean you're at risk of developing high blood pressure if you do not take steps to keep your blood pressure under control.

The CDC in America has a slightly different cut-off points and blood pressures measurements between 120-129/90 is deemed to be Elevated blood pressure. Whereas 130-139/80-89 stages 1 hypertension in America. Stage 2 hypertension is 140/90 or over. In some ways, it is good because there is an attempt to get people to take action quicker, and making lifestyle changes is such an important part of blood pressure control.

Hey doc, since no one on YT still have not explained causes a human being to have high and low blood pressure? As in what foods, activities causes high and low blood pressure? This is a better subject than actually explaining the 120/80 🤷‍♂️

What are possible reasons for isolated diastolic hypotension? I have noticed that when I am symptomatic with lightheaded, nervousness, fast heart rate, shaky, ect., my diastolic is between 45-60 but my systolic remains between 100-129. I have a normal CT heart scan, stress test, and echo cardiogram. Although, I was diagnosed with POTS and inappropriate sinus tachycardia.

Your normal is based on your history. If you always had 90-60 then that's your normal, if you always had 130-90 then that's normal. If suddenly and then for a prolonged period you start seeing a movement in BP along with symptoms then you have a problem.

Lifestyle changes such as yoga and breathing exercises when practiced with discipline and properly, along with diet regulations such as reduced processed and packaged food to more naturally occurring and raw foods can drastically change your blood pressure.

Why is there so much talk and information out there for high blood pressure? I have low blood pressure in the morning..have had it for 2 years. I'm 73 and have talked to my doctor and cardiologist. They said it's because of poor circulation and to drink fluids when I get up. What could be other reasons for low BP? Thank you!
