What is a LOW and HIGH blood pressure (Hypertension) | Doctor Explains
Показать описание
We'll look at what blood pressure really means and the difference between systolic blood pressure and diastolic. We will also learn about when we have low blood pressure (hypotension) and when it is too high (hypertension). In the end, we'll discuss why high blood pressure can be so harmful to your health.
To put it simply, your blood pressure is the pressure exerted on the walls of your blood vessels by your blood - which is being pumped by your heart. Blood pressure is usually is recorded with 2 numbers. The systolic pressure (higher number) is the force at which your heart pumps blood around your body. The diastolic pressure (lower number) is your blood pressure when your heart muscle is between beats and relaxed. They're both measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg).
In the UK high blood pressure (hypertension) is considered to be 140/90mmHg or higher (or 150/90mmHg or higher if you're over the age of 80). Blood pressure is considered to be normal between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg. Low blood pressure is considered to below 90/60. When your blood pressure readings are between 120/80mmHg and 140/90mmHg could mean you're at risk of developing high blood pressure if you do not take steps to keep your blood pressure under control.
The CDC in America has a slightly different cut-off points and blood pressures measurements between 120-129/90 is deemed to be Elevated blood pressure. Whereas 130-139/80-89 stages 1 hypertension in America. Stage 2 hypertension is 140/90 or over. In some ways, it is good because there is an attempt to get people to take action quicker, and making lifestyle changes is such an important part of blood pressure control.
