My husband’s family does white elephant gifts for a gift exchange, and I got a vintage cigar box with a sewing awl and supplies that belonged my husband’s grandfather. My husband and I started dating in high school, and I met his grandfather and grandmother right after my last grandmother died. They adopted me because they hated that I no longer had any grandparents. They were true to their word through the almost 7 years my husband and I dated before getting married. His grandmother died within the first year, but Grandpa had a relationship with me independent of my husband and would send cards and gifts for my birthday and Christmas, invited me to visit, and he came to visit me.

I’m thrilled to get this gift, and I have been wanting to do some leatherwork and make homemade books, which the awl and waxed thread would work really well for.

Looks like it might be easier if you add a needle to the loose end to help get into the loop

Thanks for the video! Someone gave me their crafty cast offs, and they had included this type of Awl. Now I can get to makin!

I have had my dads awl for years. Finally need it. I need to stitch a strip of rubber to the inside of an old strap wrench. It has material like a fire hose for the strap and a strong bar for leverage but the material just slides around the pully i need to remove. Tried it with a rubber strap from the broken plastic handle of the store bought and it held fast. That bolt was holding that pully with a death grip. Gonna give it a try.

Got mine some years ago and I love the thing. It also cut my leather sewing time to a quarter of what it used to be right off the bat. The spool is a nice edition but this is what the eye on a SAK awl (or amy similar tool) is for. I didn't know this until I started using this tool.

Nice. I could see this working for thinner weight leathers. Would be neat to see a timed video of someone experienced with the stitching awl vs someone experienced with a regular saddle stitch.
