Raymond Ceulemans is the master of 3-cushion, 21-time world champion (first time in 1963, last time in 2001) and has his place on the mount rushmore with Ronnie O'Sullivan and Effren Reyes when it comes to hitting a ball with a stick. This is even a level above snooker when it comes to difficulty. He's the main reason why we are the dominating country.

It’s so much fun to play this game, but difficult. I played it often when I was 13, 14 and 15 back in the first half of the 1980’s. In the local neighborhood bar while drinking a fluitje (a small size pilsner beer) and chain smoking cigarettes. Nobody thought anything of it back then in The Netherlands, even though legally we were not allowed to drink alcohol. And after an hour (you could only pay for one hour) it was other people’s turn, then we played darts while cueing for another one-hour slot. While playing the other guests, especially the old-timers, would comment and advise on how to play a difficult shot. Fond memories and good times! I’m happy to have grown up without smartphones and tablets.

Hi Ian. I used to play a bit of this type of billiards when i was younger, i was always fascinated at the billiard clubs watching the old guys playing this, instead of snooker. Every Club used to have 1 or 2 of these tables here in Portugal. All the best

When I lived in The Netherlands I would play billiards with my neighbor every Wednesday night. It's basically about mental geometry.

There’s a billiard hall in Vegas my son wanted to check out (he’s a billiards fanatic, has two dozen sets of billiards/snooker ball sets, all different). It’s upstairs in the “Little Saigon” part of town. They have four billiards tables and at least six or so Carom tables. It was fascinating to watch these old guys play. The owner gave my son a free set of carom balls to add to his collection.

You should take a look at "KegleBilliard", it is a bit like 3-Cushion but with holes and pins on the table.
It's big in Denmark... 🙂👍

This game, unfortunately, is not very popular in North America, I think mostly because it is a highly cerbral game that requires Years of dedication and intense concentration, and you will be hard-pressed to find a pocketless billiard table. The game itself can sometimes get tedious but there is no game better to teach you cue-ball control. The key to this game is using banks, angles, spin/English, and correct weight. Playing this game will force you to develop a strong stance and stroke and it will also teach you cue-ball mastery. I would suggest to further understand the game, once you understand the objective, is to pause the video before the player even gets down to address the shot and try to figure out how you would approach the shot. While there are many ways to skin a cat in this game there is always a "right" shot and you will learn how to determin that. Great choice for a game to dive into IWrocker. Cheers.

I played Cushion Billiards in my late teens and early twenties and it's really fun.

A few notes from my memory.

- There are small and big tables. As a beginner you play on a small table which is the size of a pool table
- As a beginner you just try to hit both other balls without the need to hit any cushion before hitting the second ball
- Tables are heated. That's why they are much faster than pool tables

One quirk: each player gets the same number of "visits" to the table to get to the agreed number of points. You might be the first to get to that, but if you were the first to play your opponent still has one more visit.

Fun Fact: in "The Hustler" Fast Eddy Felson plays 3 cushion billiards.

I remember a short with Donald Duck where he went to Mathmagic land, and one of the items used to explain mathmatics was using 3 cushion billiards!

It´s a really hard game, but very helpfull for your performance on pool in general, once you get the idea and become better at it. 3-cushion pool tables are usually warmed so balls are more reactive and run longer. Different game, but you can learn a lot from it.

Having spent six years at an English prep school, I learned "regular" 3-ball billiards playing (and usually losing) to Year 8 prefects. This variation, which we called Carom or French billiards I only came across once at Senior school (aged 13). Regular or English billiards also has three balls (white, spot, and black), has pockets, and scores can become huge. I once played a single game which lasted almost two hours, at the Sixth Form common room.

Virtual Pool 4 (available on Steam for PC) probably has 3-cushion billiard (it has 27 different games in total, didn't find list of all of them).

The difficult bit is that in other billiard games like Pool or Snooker, you tend to mind more where the hit ball goes (i.e. into a pocket) than you do the cue ball. That transition takes time.

Also, 3-cushion is bloody hard. If you ever get to play on a pocketless table, my advice is to ditch the 3-cushion requirement and just try to hit both other balls with the cue ball. That’s more than hard enough to have fun, with much less frustration.

Carom billiards is popular in Europe, particularly in France, where it originitated. It is also popular in Asian countries, including Japan, the Philippines, South Korea, and Vietnam, but is considered obscure in North America.

This is an italian game, we call it "Carambola".
In Italy we play also "5 poles" (Triestina) and "9 poles" (Goriziana), take a look at them.

A long time ago I and some of my friends frequented a local billiards hall / cafe. Used to shoot pool, and when feeling extra sharp played snooker. There was one 3 cushion billiards table, but only the most skilled ever entered a match.
