What a great game to learn! It'd help up your skills, big time.
Ages ago someone taught me: warm up on a billiards table. Then, move to an 8-ball table. You'll CLEAN UP. And, he was RIGHT! Then I learned 3-ball pool, the rule being sink them in under 5 shots. Between those two 'practice' games, a bit of billiards, then some 3-ball - you'd be amazed at how well your 8-ball game improves.
3-cushion billiards would be similar - play for a bit, and your skills would, I bet, improve massively.
