Installing 1,000 Gallons Of Surplus Tanks for Rain Water Storage

During last year's drought conditions we had a hard time keeping the garden and fish pond watered. The pond especially needs non-chlorinated water for the fish, so we can't just top it off with city tap water. This year I found two 500-gallon plastic storage tanks, so we're installing them as huge rain barrels!

I was originally hoping to make some kind of observatory pod or ham radio shack out of one of the barrels, but they're just too darn useful for water storage! Maybe the space pod thing will happen in the future if I find one that isn't as good for water.

I like to use strips of 2” thick pink insulation when I haul stuff on top of my Subaru. The rack does well but with adding the foam, it really helps to lock in non-planer items.

Your garage could be a very nice Observatory Pod simply by sectioning a small area of the roof sliding on garage door rails. I’m quite sure you would figure out the details.

Protect the water tank from UV degradation by utilizing those billboard tarps. Added bonus: they might be more attractive to your neighbors.

you could always wrap the tank in silver foil tape to keep the uv out !

I envy your rain catchment setup. That is awesome!
Been on the lookout for free pickle barrels or something similar myself to replace my couple barrels that got damaged over the winter.

Pretty sweet Gabe. I have installed two of those IBCs for rainwater, I just have to hook up a pump, I am planning on running it to my toilet cistern, maybe the washing machines. I'll post a video in time... some good tips on rainwater collection and other off grid stuff in a book called "the autonomous house", mechanical ways to divert the first flushes of rainwater so the debris and bird droppings don't go into the tank, I guess it depends on what you're using it for.

Saw a Civil War photo of a mortar on a rail cart. You could put one of those small barrels on your rail cart, reenforce it, and have giant, rail mounted seige potato mortar!

100 gallons from the run off from only about 1/3 of your roof!?!
At just over 8 pounds a gallon?
That is over 800 pounds already.
Impressive.

Instead of paint you can try some sort of wrap and a uv light for algae.

Nice, ill be looking out for your future videos. I am looking to do the same to run my DIY above ground sprinklers on my lawn. Looking to use a 1 to 1/2 hp pump to pressure them and maybe do it on 3 zones in case the pump cant power all of them up. have a good one.

4:25 I hope you save the steel tubing, that shape seems interesting to me, maybe you can make something with it?

Long time happy fish. Would a portable tarp catchment for fun and survival be interesting? (and something to do with them, heh) Maybe a solar stil(or beach sauna)?

As the level switches are most likely close contact, a LED bar graph (or traffic lights) makes a simple electric circuit with an interesting visual indication
