Why Do Japanese LOVE to Drink so Much?

When you start living in Japan, there is one thing you will notice right away. There is an unusual number of drinking parties. Not only in the workplace, but every community holds drinking parties at every opportunity. Even the Japanese are getting tired of it, and half-mandated drinking parties at the workplace are becoming a problem. Why do Japanese people like drinking parties so much?

In most cases, I think it is because many Japanese people cannot express their true feelings without drinking. My old boss also said, "In the end, you can't trust anyone until you go out drinking. You never know what they are thinking in their minds." If you are invited to a drinking party, you do not need to force yourself to attend or to drink. However, since the purpose is essentially to deepen friendship within the community, it is better to show up occasionally as part of communication.

In my town, it's because there's only like three things to do.

The Japanese are so distrustful of each other sometimes man, from sitting on your knees to make sure someone can't immediately get up to attack, to hosting drinking parties to see what peoples' inhibitions are hiding

Everything I've heard about Japan is that it can be quite stressful and high strung. So it makes sense that drinking parties would be a way for everyone to unwind.

The drinking culture in Finland is quite similar as we don't really express our feelings sober either 😄

Well, I'm from Belgium and we love drinking a lot here as well. I was in Mexico a few years ago and it was the same. I must say, when I was in Mexico, I really started drinking in order to fight against a deeper anxiety I had at the time.
It's interesting what you say about Japan, about showing their true feelings. Drinking alcohol can be quite pleasant, and when we live a very stressful life or have some deep-rooted anxiety, it can lead to a stronger drinking culture. It's fine at the beginning, but that's when it can become dangerous.

As a second generation of 2 ethnicities where drinking together is very much a part of the culture (Mexican and German) I can say when I visited Japan I felt that the drinking parties were the most open and warming events I attended. Maybe it’s because of my Latino inviting upbringing but overall Japan seemed cold and reserved…. Until they started drinking! So I think you’re right Shogo!

It's social networking, breaking the Japanese rigid social bounds! In several Budo, this occurred by meeting in sensei's room or equivalent after Gassuku training. Yes, it is important to know what the 'rules' of behavior are and not overindulge!

I always wonder (and have asked people before) what you're supposed to do if you don't/can't drink alcohol. Like, what are you expected to do?

I believe alcohol itself plays a role, too. It takes away the need to inhibit and unwind tensions with other people. Thus, it's much easier to communicate without too many constraining formalities.

As a teetotaler, I suddenly feel I'd have an extra hard time living in Japan. It's still totally a bucket list trip for me though!

“You don’t have to force yourself to go”
Reality:
Professor holds drinking party and you don’t go: Bad student! No recommendation letter 4 u

Boss holds drinking party and you don’t go: Bad employee! No promotion 4 u

Friend/coworker holds drinking party and you don’t go: You disrespect me. You disrespect my family. No helping 4 u

I don't drink so it would be really awkward.

People from other countries often describe Americans as being very extroverted, confident, talkative, and boisterous.

Reading between the lines, I think they're really saying we always seem drunk.
