Infra red transmit sensor at 45 degrees, when rain hits the screen the light gets refracted away (dispersed) and less light gets to the receiving sensor. Sensor comes on and speeds up according to how much rain gets reflected... modern sensors have gel pads between the sensor and the screen to help with the light and some say to reduce vibration perhaps
