After seeing what the nuke looked like from real footage in the past, I was dissapointed by the actual visuals of the explosion. I get they wanted to use practical effects throughout, but in the end, what they tried for the nuke just looked like a big explosion not a nuclear bomb. The build up and the tension in the scene was amazing however, and the delay of the sound wave was realistic and awesome.

Shit caught me off guard when the noise finally hit. I knew it took a minute for sound to travel but holy fuck, IMAX was the way to go

I don’t think it’s fair to say appreciating the bomb scene requires _lowering_ your expectations. However, I will say the explosion certainly challenges audiences to use their imagination to amplify what is shown on screen. For example, at the start of this clip, on the surface you see a pretty underwhelming blast. But if you imagine this blast being extremely far away as it actually was for Oppenheimer and the people observing, the explosion here is massive and is a worthy representation of the atomic bomb. The scene could have definitely benefited from one or two CGI-enhanced wide shots of the explosion

Given that view was supposed to be the 20 miles away observation post, I’ve come to appreciate the explosion a little more. I was a little underwhelmed at first, but the distances were 5 miles or for Oppenheimer, 10 miles for the people laying down, and 20 miles for the others. I think they could have made the explosion a little better, but I’m not mad at it anymore.

Yea unfortunately Nolan really didn’t manage to pull this shot off. Looks too much like a normal sized explosion.

Ok. My personal opinion: I appreciate Mr. Nolan and the art of practical effects. For example, I really like practical effects in horror movies or movies like Mad Max, Mission Impossible and so on. But here in this movie, it was so real that it didn't feel like that. And please, saying "Did you want him to use a real atom bomb?" isn't an argument. The scene was chilling, the whole movie was a piece of art, but a little bit of good CGI would be a nice addition. In my opinion, it was possible to make the practical explosion look more convincing. Still, it was a great scene. I really felt it...

not gonna lie, I was actually pretty disappointed with this explosion. It's sad that The Dark Knight Rises had a better nuke scene than this movie.

i feel like wit som cgi meddling they could've made the explosion feel less closer than it is cuz it really feels like its a small explosion nearby instead of a huge explosion from far away

Like a lot of others here, I feel that the actual bomb scene lacked impact. The impact, buildup and suspense was magnificent, but the actual scene of the explosion was very underwhelming in my opinion.

That’s just a close up of a regular fire. Sometimes, Nolan isn’t as smart as we’re led to believe. I mean, seriously, how can you capture a nuclear explosion with “practical effects”? It’s impossible and this scene really takes you out of the movie.
