Q-Tips state that their cotton swabs should not be used for ear cleaning, but this was not always the case.

In fact, the company has long marketed ear care as a primary use for its product, dating back to the 1920s. Mid-century advertisements depicted individuals cleaning their ears and even their babies' ears with Q-Tips. The packaging of older versions of the product listed "adult ear care" as a main use.

Betty White endorsed the brand, promoting them as the "safest and softest" swabs for use on the eyes, nose, and ears. This extensive marketing campaign led generations to associate cotton swabs with ear cleaning.

However, it wasn't until the 1970s that Q-Tips added a warning label against inserting the swabs into your ears. By that point, the habit had already become deeply ingrained into the consumer’s mind.
