Samsung One UI 5 review: Best Android UI?

Samsung's Android software has been rough in the past. But today things are different. Samsung supports its phones for just as long as Google. Its ecosystem is vast, its feature set is formidable, and its phones generally run well and look decent. In fact, between all those various angles, you could argue that Samsung has the best software overall of any Android brand.

OneUI 5 on my Note 20 Ultra is hands down the best android experience I can ask for short of a newer flagship. Having tried phones from other android manufacturers, while sometimes the hardware is more impressive, the software always has me coming back to Samsung. There are just so many little QoL features I'd need a separate app or workaround for with other software skins. Plus yeah, the multitasking is freaking awesome!

I remember Samsung having the worst software experience but the One UI 5.0 has been a joy to use on my s20 FE. Feels like smoother now.

OneUI ought to be the default Android experience. The reachability, multitasking, DeX, customization, and fold-adaptations make it second to none. The Pixel skin feels like "kid's mode" next to OneUI.

The only real criticism is that Good Lock's features should simply be built in to the base OS.

Good lock and bixby routines changed my android experience completely. When I found it out for the first time it was almost like receiving 3 new android updates, it's insane how much you can customize and automate.

Right now I have so many edge gestures, samsung dex configurations, multitasking options, automation features you name it...and they keep adding features. Yesterday I found out that android supports light distro Linux emulation and a hooked it up to a monitor and was litteraly running Linux on my phone with a mouse and keyboard. Just recently I also found out that I can use bixby routines to make macro commands where I can initiate a routine to do something to a certain app that I have previously defined.

Of course this is more of a enthusiastic type of deal, and 99% of consumers won't care, but for people that really like to tinker with things but still want a reliable software experience, Samsung might be the best out there. That being said, I really only think this applies to higher tier samsung phones, previously to having a note I did not enjoy the mid-range experience at all, at those price ranges I would honestly go with the competition.

As far as I know, Samsung had the lock screen stuff before already with Good Lock modules.

Yes, the devices have improved. I wish they would only send to the phones the same sub-interface 4.1.1 and the upcoming 5.1.1 interface. The phones stop at the 4.1 interface and the 5.1 interface.

We most definitely need a dedicated, comprehensive look at Good Lock and it's various plug-ins!!

It might not be perfect, but it's definitely better than MIUI

I was using OnePlus before but after switching to Samsung, I don't ever find the need to clear apps from the memory. One UI is just that good with app management.

I went from having app icons on my home screen to just having widgets while keeping all the apps ready for access through edge panels. The minimalism is great.

Bixby routine is not that great and comes no where close to Siri Shortcuts. Samsung should atleast give option to have multiple if else blocks, which can be nested and access to all the system information. There is a massive scope for improvement there.

S22 ultra is the best phone on the market and the night camera is seconds to none! Amazing phone.

widget stacking is an iphone copy-cat?!
android had that feature in custom launchers for many years now.
Apple copied that from Action launcher!

Samsung have had lock screen customisation since Oreo back in 2018 by the way. Surprising you don't know that when you've used Samsungs for so many years. iOS copied them not the other way around

I love One UI because of all the customization that you can do

One UI has come a long way and keeps improving month after month. Stable fast and the longest software updates, the most feature rich software by far and a good ecosystem. And have I said how much i loathe not being able to remove move or even shrink the at a glance and Google search widgets?

When I have to do something for my mom on her Samsung or my brothers I can't stand all the nonsense settings and apps, give me my no nonsense Pixel 7 any day.

Also until Samsung has call screening and rejects literally every robocall or random spam calls like the Pixel it's not even a contender for me.

I do like the Good Lock feature however.
