2017 Mercedes G-Class - The Rolex of 4X4's

Sweet & Sour take to the dirt in one of the world's most capable off-road machines - The 2017 Mercedes-Benz G-Glass. This truck is definitely a status symbol but how does it handle the gnarly stuff? And why would anyone buy one of these?

We are on our fourth G-class (all second hand and the one we have now is a totally restored 1980 Cabriolet) and I think some might be missing the point when thinking that a modern G-Class would be the only car in the garage. Porsche for sporty drives, BMW/Audi commuting, Range Rover for a rolling gents club and G-class when everything else has gone haywire.

I like how the guy compared it to a Rolex, it makes sense.. people like the mechanical side of the car, they know what it can do

I am from Bulgaria. (It is in Eastern Europe if you are too lazy to use a search engine) We have very bad roads (due to corruption) and even driving in some parts of the city, resembles off roading. We also have harsh winters. So SUVs are a common sight in my country. And this is as you said it - the best in terms of status symbol. Its 1979 size is good for city driving and parking (compared to a new Range Rover) And the G-class has the mafia vibe to it so people do not cut you off in traffic and do not honk and argue with you. So there are some logical reasons of getting one. lol

I hope they never change these damn trucks. They are amazing. Anyone who complains about the on road driving of these machines is straight up missing the point of these! The price tag sucks but they are great off road and that’s what they are to be used for. Luxury truck made for off road. And I can’t wait till I get mine!

Also these trucks last a good long while.

I own one and cannot disagree with anything either of these guys said. With that said I live in NYC where the roads are cracked, speed bump imbued, messy, covered in snow 3 months of the year and speed limits are 40 mph max. The G wagon handles NYC with aplomb like a boss. Too, it's not too big (length/width) so it can park in normal spaces and maneuver traffic. It's the best vehicle for me period with a balance of prestige and capability. I used to own a bmw 5 which was terrible in the winter and bottomed out every time I drove it over a pot hole or crack or speed bump. It's fine steering, handling and speed were useless too for the most part. To each their own.

Ive had many many nice cars in the past 20 years and I love my G wagon, It's my daily driver. I understand both side, but its just something about it that makes you love it. Maybe its because I like trucks also??

This car always have so much negative talk but it's a beast of a vehicle on how it's made and what it can do of course No one really take them off road it's a status symbol like a iPhone I'm definitely getting one when I get my CDL license to afford one

Some people just love a body on frame SUV. I get it, feels like you are sitting up higher than everyone. That's why I love my 80 series land cruiser but I agree it's not what you would call good on road. Dying bread for sure though. Wrangler, 4Runner, Land Cruiser, Suburban and a few others are the only ones left.

And like Rolex it doesnt get used for its intended purpose. Go for the G-Shocks of off road vehicles, the Pajeros, Patrols and Land Cruisers out there.

Stop misleading people by labeling it the 2017 G class, because it is not. This is the 2016 model which has an ongoing production until march/april 2017. The actual 2017 model will be introduced to the public also somewhere around that time and will start production. It will have a slightly different exterior but keep its all well known G class shape, while the interior will get significant changes.

Ive owned my first benz (97 E420) about a year now and im never going back to domestics (except for my one Mustang) I would love to replace my pickup with a W461 military surplus G and build up a mean om605 for it :) Maybe next year...

1:39 those who developed are dead, it has been developed for 40 years now, don't say it like it was made just now
5:35 wrong again, Rubicon does NOT have those differentials, and it does have the articulation (plus a horrible engine), Rubicon only has a center differential, front and rear on rubicon are open differentials that transfer torque using traction control system (breaks), so apples and oranges guys.

Why do you buy a Rolex? The same reason why I bought a G class. Because I can.

Why people buy classic cars it is not about the "I can" you can find classic for few thousand bucks - it is because the feeling - and G gives you the unique feeling, no one can deny that.

It's always the weak Canadian/American/British car journalist that talk shit and don't get the point this car, it's not designed to drive your fluffy ass to the supermarket, it's designed to get you home safely in tough parts of the world. That's why you'll never see a Range Rover being driven by Russian mafia, or through the Australian outback or through the African bush. Real manly places requires a real manly car, enter G wagons and Land Cruisers...

If you want S class luxury, almost the ride of an S Class, 7 seats. Good off road - as good as most people will ever need, get a GLS.
