There are differences in how you pop up on a longboard vs how you pop up on a shorter board. We're going to get to the bottom of it in this video. Enjoy!

I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR A VIDEO TO EXPLAIN THE MOTION OF THIS POP UP FOR SO LONG. Thank you.

I knew a guy. He was a stocky powerful dude who use to longboard professionally and rides 9’2-9’6 tri fin performance longboard, heavy glassed and heavy boards. Anyway I’ve never seen someone rip on a longboard like he does during Fall east coast hurricane season on Long Island. And he surfs off the back right over the tail and he says that’s the only way you can surf a longboard vertically, doing snaps’ very aggressive explosive top turns etc. like a shortboard. His boards have rocker though and I’ve never seen him walk his longboard. He also uses cutaway center fin with side bites. But it was incredible watch him charge overhead hurricane waves among shortboarders on his long ass board and surf top to bottom. He also lived in Hawaii for a while. It seems there’s also a certain style of longboard in specific to Hawaii. Those guys are use to good powerful rippable waves there’s and those waves seem to be made for back footed longboarding where you can have better control as you stated and really shred vertically up and down the face. Less trim less walking. Just aggressive longboard shredding. Usually those guys are also stocky and powerful, able to control a big heavy board in good waves.

Hey Brian, Gotta love days like Wave Day 2! I normally do a drop knee pop-up by default, because my body doesn't want to "pop" 😀

Those waves from 4:58 to 5:39 really show your improved style, that back foot pop up is good for control and setting yourself up for the line especially on really big surf days. UUmm your board wax still needs to be renewed, maybe a vid on waxing your board with different types of wax for different temperature water could be on the cards. Keep up the good work its inspiring for a lot of people, I often recommend to beginner's to view your vids.

Saw a guy at my local do exactly this. Looks super smooth and flowing. The comparison of you doing both styles is crazy as the pop up on the tail looks so good, the mid board pop up not so much. Really interesting take.

Great form on the drop knee takeoff. I use it more as a stalling maneuver. It’s good to have different takeoffs so that each wave can dictate which one you use. If you decide how to takeoff when you park your car, then inevitably you will have some waves that don’t feel good.

Double Thumbs Up Brian!

As a longtime short-boarder who recently switched to a longboard, I've realised that I am often too far up the board to turn effectively but haven't quite been able to figure how to rectify it. I think you've hit the nail on the head. Thanks!

Thanks man, coming from a short board background, I’ve found longboards really hard to ride, I think this will help enormously! Cheers from 🇮🇪

Thanks for this video, I'm teaching myself on a longboard. These are some really helpful tips, I was popping up way too far forward.

Hi Brian, thank you for the video. Im a beginner, and watched heaps of professional surfers’ videos like yours. I found some of you guys used this way to pop up and looks so easy and beautiful. But I know it isn’t 😅. I’ll def try it out and give you a feedback later. say hi from NZ 😊

Oh, some secrete sauce in there. To me nothing looks and feels more beautiful than a slow delayed pop up. Makes sense that it would allow you to smoothly transition into clean levitation. Open hand!!!! Gunna try, cant wait. THANK YOU

You have to use it an appropriate waves. There can be multiple waves in the same session that require different approaches. If it's forced, it usually doesn't end well.
