Geoscience culture is traditionally exclusive. Most training programs continue to implement objectives and expectations that require students to be physically able to access the field rather than designing opportunities across the broad spectrum of geoscience that can be aligned to our students’ strengths and abilities. Additionally, marketing geoscience programs and career options only to students who exhibit skills and abilities of a traditional field-based practitioner are limiting prospective talent and diverse perspectives that lead to scientific innovation. As such, the geosciences are falling short of connecting with the immense pool of talent enrolled at every college and university by not adequately portraying the skills and abilities required for career opportunities in tomorrow’s workforce. This presentation will take a brief look at the history of access and accommodation research in the geosciences. Examples of recent activities that are fostering collaboration and inclusive communities of learning will be shared. Learn more about the IAGD at @.
