After Sarah Wood’s father passed away unexpectedly in 2009, she had to take over his HVAC company, making it a woman-owned business in a predominantly male industry. She found herself suddenly having to learn to recruit employees and build a great team in a field far from what she's used to.
As she says herself, building a team wasn’t just a choice - it was a NECESSITY. If you want your business to grow, you have to focus on your role as an owner within the company. And the only way to afford yourself that freedom is if you have other people who can take care of the day-to-day operations.
Fortunately, Sarah came into the business with a great work ethic and superb customer service skills. These skills helped her to turn her dad's enterprise into a thriving woman-owned business in a male-dominated industry, while also learning a lot of lessons along the way.
One thing she learned was to recruit employees in the same way that you'd approach marketing. Advertise for the employees that you really want to attract and have. And don’t just wait until you're really in urgent need to hire someone. If you want to find your ideal employee and build a great team, you’ve got to keep that recruitment process going.
Another important factor in Sarah’s success was making her staff feel appreciated. Your staff is the foundation of your business operations. Whether you throw parties or give out bonuses, you'll have to find some way to reward them for their hard work.
Learning to recruit employees and retain them is one of the most essential factors in the success of a business. With the right people, you can maintain a growing business, no matter what challenges arise.
