In this video, Rick Hillmer introduces us to the FSO-12 Safety Function Module from ABB. The FSO-12 safety function module can be added to any ACS880 and can provide several safety functions that, until now, required much more hardware.

Many manufacturers have safe torque off options for their drives, but safe torque off acts exactly as the name implies: no torque is provided to the motor, either motoring or braking torque. So, while this is "safe", there is still the issue of stopping a high inertia load. External devices are required to sense when the motor stops and to delay the stop signal until the motor has stopped. The FSO-12 can solve this problem, without the need for a safety rated encoder or zero speed sensor.

This module comes with all the needed hardware and connections to mount either in one of the option slots, or next to the drive. This module has 8 digital inputs, so it can accept up to 4 redundant safety rated inputs, with or without a test pulse.

The safe torque off input lets the motor coast to a stop. When you do a safe stop emergency, the drive brings the motor to a controlled stop, verifies it, then enables the safe torque off. This capability is due to ABB's Direct Torque Control algorithm, the drive knows how fast the motor is actually spinning without any feedback.
