In this video, Rick Hillmer demonstrates a winding application using an ABB ACS355 variable frequency drive along with a Banner LE550 sensor.

For this application, the drive and sensor are set up to adjust speed based on roll diameter to provide a constant 25 ft per minute linear speed.

As you can see the ACS355 variable frequency drive is running a Baldor 1hp motor with a 10:1 gearbox. The LE550 detects the roll diameter. Based on feedback from this sensor, the drive will automatically adjust the speed of the winder. Note that the encoder is not used.

The sensor was taught to provide 4 ma with an empty roll and 20ma with a full roll. The parameters in the drive are set to run at 200 rpm when empty and 82 rpm when full. This should give us a linear speed of about 25 ft/min.
