SpaceX Big Mission To Do Something NASA and Russia Couldn't for Decades!
Dragon, the world's leading crewed vehicle, continues to carve out its place in history. While Boeing's Starliner remains stuck at the ISS, SpaceX is making 2024 its most active year yet for Dragon missions. To cap off this remarkable year, SpaceX has made an unexpected announcement about an unprecedented crew mission that could significantly impact the future of crewed spaceflight.
What's even more impressive is that this mission will achieve something that powerful space giants like NASA and Russia have not been able to accomplish in the past.
So, what exactly is this groundbreaking Dragon crew mission? And how will it influence the trajectory of space exploration? Let’s dive into these questions in today’s episode of Great SpaceX.
SpaceX Big Mission To Do Something NASA and Russia Couldn't for Decades!
Before diving into this exciting mission, I need to clarify something from a previous episode. I mentioned that Dragon could potentially launch five crewed missions this year. Unfortunately, the Axiom-4 mission has been delayed to early 2025, which might seem to challenge that prediction. But don't worry—SpaceX has something even bigger planned to replace Axiom-4, and that's what we'll discuss today.
On August 12, SpaceX announced a new crewed mission called Fram2, named after the Norwegian ship that made pioneering voyages to the North and South Poles between 1893 and 1912. This private mission will feature four astronauts, and according to SpaceX’s announcement on X, “Fram2 will become the first human spaceflight mission to fly over and explore the Earth’s polar regions from orbit.”

The mission has already generated significant buzz. Elon Musk, SpaceX’s founder, simply tweeted, “This is cool.” Jared Isaacman, the commander of the Polaris Dawn mission—another notable private mission involving Dragon—also chimed in, saying, “This looks like a cool & well-thought-out mission. I wish the @framonauts the best on this epic exploration adventure! Polaris Program, Inspiration4, Axiom, & now Fram2 showcase what commercial missions can achieve thanks to @SpaceX’s reusability and NASA’s vision with the commercial crew program. All just small steps towards unlocking the last great frontier.”
Even the popular space content creator Everyday Astronaut shared that he had a brief conversation with the four Fram2 astronauts, indicating that this mission is already capturing the imagination of many within the space community.

To be resolved, thank you.

Yes!

The great thing about SpaceX is that they have their own missions, they are not innovating for NASA alone, but for the advancement of all mankind! Other Aerospace corporations are only for the money alone, so they do the bare minimum, and often fail for not doing their best!

Only improving when someone else asks for it, slows minkind down.We will not have the tech, that could save us, from the unforeseen dangers of the future. Space is vast, and we have only begun to explore, the possibilities!

yea, just imagine what SpaceX / Musk could accomplish if Nasa and the Government would get the hell out of our private business

It's so exciting to have Norway's first astronaut on a vessel named after a norwegian expedition ship!

I don't believe it is any harder to launch a manned polar orbit mission than a "normal" 40-60 degree orbit inclination. Delta V is going to be higher than normal but spacex is launching dragons with RTLS nowadays so DELTA V is not an issue, also the space shuttle could carry 10 tons to leo imagine what it could do if it didn't have any payload
I don't think they couldn't, they just didn't want to for whatever reason

We have put satellites in polar orbits in the past. Not too groundbreaking. But very cool stuff.

Yes! Very excited about this polar orbit investigation from space. Go Fram2

At last, we'll be able to see the Antarctic Jungle.

Airplanes have been flying over the poles for decades. In the late 60's I flew over the Arctic for three years. We circled the north pole just so we could say we flew around the world in four minutes. Air Force reconnaissance. Alone, unarmed and unafraid (except for moments of !@#$*). Good to see space cadets catching up. LOL I know lol is old hat but so am I.

Where no mission has gone before!
SPACEX manned space capabilities have progressed so far with focused execution of mission technical objectives and contractural obligations..
Can we imagine the possibilities if the bureaucracy were tamed?
WELL DONE!
Please continue to dream and execute BIG.
Who knows?
Maybe we could get back to the moon some day soon.

YES!!!
And I for one can not wait to see the unredacted photos of those regions

I always wondered why the ISS wasn't launched to polar orbit... seemed a more useful orbit. I guess the required additional energy to put stuff in polar orbit precluded it? It's good to have adventurers again. That's how stuff moves forward.

Fram2 is exciting for me for three reasons: 1) I've constantly heard polar orbits and fly overs were banned since there are purportedly openings into the earth from those areas, as documented by Adm. Byrd. There are boxed out areas on Google maps apparently. (2) Perhaps we'll encounter the Black Knight satellite. (3) Hopefully this mission will ultimately reveal, once and for all, the accuracy of these myths, we can evolve from this constant hiding of information and denial of facts.
We shall will we??

It must be exciting to fly just under the borealis light. Or do they even fly through it?

NASA Embarrassed?! So should the folks be that made your thumbnail! The videos are still great though.

To have the earth spinning under you like a top, while passing over the poles, wow! And in opposite directions depending on the North or South Pole . Will they land in using that orbit or will they have to switch to an east- west direction first? Should be lots of video.

That’s great!!! I have been to the the South Pole on a USCG Icebreaker & it would be great to see pics they would take 👍🏻😊👏🏻

What is "Embrased"? (on the thumbnail) Never heard of that before.

Will miss Van Allen belts as they are equatorial and banana shaped in two is a valuable innovation.

Forgive me for being naive but what is the big deal orbiting the poles?
