Yes. Excellent presentation. Keeping it simple and practical, no fancy baloney on detail. It's exactly what I do on the mountains in Ireland. Close fitting synthetic base, nice fleece mid and light but proofed shell. I work with those three, putting on and taking off as necessary. Simple and it works. Good stuff, proper attitude ;-)

you cover some of the most random stuff, but I find it all so interesting and helpful

This is perfect advice.
All year motorcyclist in the UK and I've practiced this method for 20 years.
Each bulky layer one size up for that thermal air layer.
You're welcome

Thanks for the video! Here in Ontario, Canada, I use a 4 layer system in the winter. A wicking polyester, a fleece sweater, a down jacket and a Gortex shell. Cheers!

Potential option? Underlayer silkies for wicking and heat retention. Sweatshirt under sweater for wicking, air insulation, and evaporation via sweater. Layer up of external shell jacket (thin and loose for hiking, movement, and evaporation) or true wool jacket (sweater thick and snug for camping, minimal movement, or more harsh weather).

Silky cap under wool cap. Optional Dollar Store plastic shower cap. Shower cap over wool cap in cool/wind/rain. Super cold/gusting winds/snow, double shower cap. Silky, shower cap, wool cap, shower cap. Definitely keeps heat in, weather and water out, and away from dry head clothing.

Wool shemagh or neck shawl.

Nice video as always. How about a follow up video on lower extremity layers and socks? Maybe even hats.

I use a three layer system too. I have an REI synthetic long sleeve shirt for my base layer, Columbia fleece for my mid layer, and a Columbia rain jacket for my outer layer. It works great for climbing 14ers.

good video...makes sense....good for fall and spring...winter I go wicking under layer, wool undies, then a fleece, and a shell layer...but depending on how cold it is, just a shell or an insulated shell...

Greetings from Canada. Upper body not a problem for me with a good parka. Legs can get very cold, especially waiting at a bus stop early morning. My answer to that is wearing snow pants over my slacks.

I use Under Amour's long sleeve compression shirts synthetic blends as a base (here in Pacific Northwest, Fred Meyers will have them on 70% off rack at times), followed by FirstAscent's Merino wool long sleeve middle layer, then whatever you want for a breathable shell. One thing not mentioned, consider a full wool buff or neck gaiter - works wondering in bitter cold - and full wool cap. If you are a member of any volunteer Search and Rescue, you can get Pro Pricing - including Outdoor Research - which can save a ton of money. FirstAscent's mountain gloves I've used in bitter cold to good success.

What can u suggest similar things for lower (legs)?

Helpful, thanks :) So, could you do wool, wool again, then a shell? Would a shell hold in moisture?

What is the pull over of the second layer: insulated? Like the big chest pocket. Thanks

Hello sir, I know you've probably already made a video that addresses this question, but I'm a new subscriber, so please forgive me, but, what is your favorite full-sized multitool?

Cotton isn't always bad. 20% cotton actually increases wick drying and durability. Am sure each wool/ fleece has it's mix; but cotton in small doses is a good thing.
