We need to FIGHT for privacy!

Is privacy dead? We certainly see and hear this sentiment echoed everywhere we go, along with claims that “online tracking is harmless”, and that “if you’ve got nothing to hide, you shouldn’t care”.

In this video, we chat with Vivaldi Technology CEO Jon von Tetzchner to debunk 4 myths about privacy.

00:00 Intro
00:51 Myth 1 - Privacy is Dead
04:45 Myth 2 - Online Tracking is Harmless
08:00 Myth 3 - It’s Not Personal Information
10:13 Myth 4 - Surveillance is Normal
12:35 What’s at Stake
13:07 Conclusion

Stop believing these people who tell us that we shouldn't bother protecting our privacy. The only way to preserve privacy in our lives is to value it and fight for it. We are empowered human beings, who can make better choices about the tech that we use, and we can opt for more privacy-preserving options.

Surveillance is not inevitable, let's stop normalizing it!

Seeing this type of content is such a relief for me. I feel crazy sometimes as someone that's intensely uncomfortable with the status quo of indefinite and pervasive surveillance.

It's a lot of info to take in, but your videos are making the once insurmountable task of retaking my privacy seem less and less pipe-dreamy. You have my sincere thanks.

"If you have nothing to hide, you shouldn't care." "OK, if you have nothing to hide, tell me the account numbers and passwords to your bank and credit card accounts." "That's different!" "Oh, so you have something to hide after all, making you quite the hypocrite."

I just recently took a look at my Google settings. The amount of crap that it tracks is frightening. I went into the permissions and immediately killed off the majority of them. And those, that are left, are by permission only. I'm constantly getting advisories to free up permissions, or the app won't work properly. Screw em ! It's not much, but, it's a start. I've bowed out of FB and don't have other social media accounts except Gmail and Yahoo. I found out that Yahoo sells my info to Verizon, my provider is Cricket, (WTF ?). I specifically worded a message to them that I don't give any permissions for them to disseminate my info to any agency, private, public, judicial or governmental. Then screen shotted it, and backed it up on a stick. If they give my info to Verizon, I have legal proof for litigation against them. The trick is, that I have to catch them at it.

When Windoze 11 was released, I pulled the plug and migrated completely to Linux. Even the TVs are controlled by a Raspberry Pi running a version of Linux. Never happier. Thanks, Naomi for urging us on to personal privacy.

Thanks for another great video! My family definitely has this kind of complicit mindset about online privacy and they roll their eyes whenever I tell them about the copious amount of data being collected on each of us 🤦‍♂

Hi Naomi can you discuss “productivity” software like Notion, Evernote, Google Calendar, Trello, Apple Notes etc. and the possible risks and concerns surrounding users potentially inputting loads of personal data in them?

Well, I for one have started to take back some of my online privacy.
I watched your video on the Brave browser some time ago and started using that instead of google chrome.
Unfortunately about 2 months ago I "messed up" (to say it nicely) and was unable to get windows running again on my laptop, tried repairing and everything but "computer said NO"
So I bit the bullet and installed Linux Mint, I was already planning to go over to Linux so this was a good a time as any to do so.
It's a bit of a learning curve for sure but I'm slowly getting there.
My next step (which I have already taken) is a Pi Hole, I am at the moment testing the setup with just my laptop but will soon have it running for my entire network and then it'll be "Bye Bye" to 99.999% of all adverts, online tracking, lots of malware and other bad things.

Naomi, I'd like to say Thank You for showing me the way 🥰

Thank you for this. Just before Christmas I got my Pixel 7, which I am stoked to put GrapheneOS on this week. But over various Christmas dinners I engaged in discussions on the topic of privacy, but the incredulity and resistance I encountered left me deflated, despondent and wondering if it would all be worth it anyway. But this video reignited my resolve. Thank you!

Ironic considering this ad was clearly given to me as a result of searching for privacy centric things and also frequently checking Vivaldi’s website. But I gotta say I feel so glad I got this ad, it’s the best advertised video I’ve ever watched. Thank you so much for fighting for privacy on the internet.

The work you choose is one of the longest possible; first you have to be heard about this topics and let them be conscious. Just at the end of the journey someone will take action. So, thank's for constantly remind us over it.

Excellent video, keep up the good work Naomi. Soo many people need to hear this... though unfortunately most won't act on it.

Some degree of monitoring is necessary for civilizations to continue. The data piracy these days is horrible, but things like CCTV shouldn't ever go away. I live in a moderate-to-severe crime area and cameras have served many purposes on our street for years. Few things convinced me as well as having our car broken into repeatedly, multiple groups casing houses.

But other than that, nah. I mean look at Blizzard-Activision and how they force you to sign up with your phone service to play OW2. That's blatant data collecting. So the way you pay to play OW2 is by giving up all your personal information. What the hell?

The privacy conundrum is eternal. Private sectors have a motive, and so do governments agencies. Even worse, private companies AND said governments share intelligence. It will never end. But as you say, it maybe mitigated!

Even if you're a honey pot, you remind me of the vintage dress wearing nerd girls I would go thrift store shopping with, Naomi. You're a dream boat. Great work as always. ❤❤❤

To assume our privacy is not a right, is a breach of our minds peace. A financial claim is 100% righteous.

Trying living in London, I park in the wrong place for more than 10 seconds, a camera picks me up and I’m fined £150. However I get stabbed in the more obvious area and nope some how that isn’t seen cause that don’t make money

The most insidious aspect of Gmail is that it not only reads the email of people who use the free Gmail service, it also reads the email of everyone who sends email to a Gmail account. Look at your group emails. How often is at least one person not using Gmail? I'm thinking of adding a signature line to my email that says, "Your Gmail is reading every email that I send to you. My data security and privacy is the price of your free Gmail account."
