A local helps me answer: should you stay in Ixtapa, Zihuatanejo, or maybe the area’s most charming surf town: Troncones. In this video we’ll take you through the most popular Zihuatanejo tourist areas and help you decide what part of the central Mexican coast is best for you. This is part of my Zihuatanejo services that includes Zihuatanejo’s best hotels and what to do in Zihuatanejo and Troncones.

La Ropa is probably my favorite beach in all of Mexico. Good choice of food, accessible, and the best part for anyone with children the waves are not rough. While I don't mind Ixtapa, I usually stay in Ixtapa, but spend most of my time at La Ropa, or at least a day out on the island. Which is very touristy, but the sand is great, the waves are great, and its a fun ride out. Zihua now doesn't look like it did in the Shawshank redemption, but my first visit back in the 80s, it was very much that tiny town, in less the 30 years its grown so much. I will have to try to visit Troncones, like you I prefer smaller, quieter resorts.

Troncones is nice, but expensive. Go a few miles north to La Saladita. Better surfing, a little more rustic yet growing, and much more affordable. Although we like Zihua the best :)
