I was consistent and provided lots of structure when my boxer was a puppy and he is SUCH a good boy. I never let him have free roam of the house or the yard until he was completely potty trained. he either was kept in the room that I was in or on a leash and I took him on a leash everytime to the same spot to potty outside. he slept in his crate every night and never whimpered. I also knew I didn't want a dog that begged for my food every time I sat down at the dinner table so I never give him anything off my plate and therefore he does not get into the trash can. I fed him in his crate to associate it with positivity and that is still where he eats and sleeps today. I didnt allow him on the furniture and we had to work on him not learning to jump up on people. 5 years later he is perfectly well behaved and so easy to take anywhere. he is polite and of course now I give him more leniency and allow him on the couch and bed occasionally. Its so nice to have a dog that is so polite and precious, but I know that had I not trained him this way as a puppy he would have turned out completely different

There needs to be a way to make this video mandatory to watch before being allowed to own a dog.

You are a life saver!
I made a big mistake.. I adopted a 1 year old untrained working-dog as a first-time dog-owner... naively thinking she had already learned the basics, and naively thinking I would manage since I do have experience training horses. Turns out I adopted a 25kg puppy with puberty behaviour and no basic skills.. and absolutely zero experience to rely on concerning dog training. So while I was wondering how to teach her sit, stay etc.. I completely missed the point where horses are kept in stables and round pens until they know how to behave and I did not give het ANY directions about houserules. The misbehaviour had already started when luckily I found your video's. We've started over and are doing much much better now ❤️

Great tips. I've adopted adult dogs from shelters because I knew I didn't have the time at home for a puppy. But now that I'm working home full time I'm looking into adopting a puppy and I totally agree about the structure. Start with a lot of structure and boundaries, and they can earn more freedom as a reward for positive behaviors. The second adult dog I adopted had a lot of food aggression (she was previously in an animal hoarding case and had to fight for food). We implemented a rule that she had to sit say during feeding time and couldn't eat until our other dog had finished eating. She learned VERY FAST to behave at mealtime and the food aggression stopped within a week.

This is AWESOME INFORMATION! I had my Precious Furbaby for 16 years and it's been one year since I put him to rest. I am still HEARTBROKEN!! I finally am thinking about getting another Furbaby, I promised my Magic when the time comes I will adopt/rescue from the shelter and I found this video to be Extremely Helpful with Creating Structure in the home🙏❤

Alright the best quote from Ian in this video for me is -"if a dog misbehaves in your home, it's your fault". Totally agree. Educate thyself and persevere. If anything these videos reminds me to take more time out to bond with my old girl who's 15 and a real inspiration. It's pretty heartbreaking when you hear Olive previous owner giving up.

Just found your channel because we have a new puppy. So wish this video existed 7 years ago when we got our first special needs dog from the shelter. Thank you for all your great educational videos, they are a huge asset to the dog caretaker community.

This video was a great help to me as i just adopted a five year old rescue Havanese. She knew absolutely nothing as she had been kept in a cage all of her life and was never socialized. Thank you and I will be sure to watch more of your excellent videos.
