When I wake up early I get more done by lunch than I do whenever I decide to sleep in a bit. Proof of this has shown in the past few weeks as I have noticed a decline in my productivity recently since I took some time off from my 5 AM morning routine.
So I needed to start waking up early again since I was going to start running again and get back to my normal workflow.
Waking up early hasn't always been easy for me, but I've learned some valuable tips from my years of making this habit stick. With me making the transition to 5 AM wakeup times again I thought what better time to make a video on that topic.
This guide to waking up early needs to come in 2 parts to be effective. The first is the why and the second is the how.
The why begins with you needing something to motivate you to wake up so early. What are your goals and dreams and how can waking up early help you achieve that. Examples of these could include working on side hustles, getting a workout in or just having time to yourself to do whatever it is that you want.
Successful people have been doing this for years. Jeff Bezos, Mark Walhberg's famous schedule of getting up at 2:30 AM as well as Benjamin Franklin's have all been shown off on YouTube in one form or another.
You need to plan what you'll do when you wake up and that includes a nearly foolproof morning routine that will wake you up.
Put your phone as an alarm and keep it away from your bed so you have to walk to it to turn it off. This also will help you avoid falling into the snooze cycle.
Drink a tall glass of water as it's been shown to be extremely helpful in waking you up and a great way to hydrate you to start your morning.
Quickly do some light exercises.
Splash cold water on your face.
There are two ways to get started the first is the embrace the suck method.
Try to go to bed a little earlier than your normal time and just wake up early. Make sure that day you don't have anything crazy important to do.
The second method is the creep it back method. The idea is that you need to wake up 15-30 minutes earlier than usual every day until you reach the desired early wake-up time. For me going from 7:30 AM to 5:00 AM could take 5-10 days with that method. However, you won't feel awful doing this tactic as much as you will with the other method. Hence why it's called the "embrace the suck" method.
Another important thing for you to do if you end up deciding to wake up early is to tell the people you live with that you're going to have an alarm going off at 5 AM especially if you have a partner or share a room with someone.
Next moving forward with the idea of telling people that you're waking up at 5 AM or early, you need to tell yourself that you are a morning person. As silly as this sounds it actually works.
I truly believe in the concept of manifesting things if you want to happen for yourself. At least in this case I think we all can agree that convincing yourself that you are a morning person is extremely important.
Lastly, you need to make sure that you get 8 hours of sleep once you are cemented in this early morning wake-up cycle. I know for me sometimes that can be hard but trust me a lack of sleep is not worth it.
The first piece of advice would be to go to sleep at a specific time, not when you feel tired.
The second piece of advice is to have a 30 minute to an hour wind down routine without electronics.
The third and final piece of advice is to let the people know you live with that getting your 8 hours is important so that you don't offend them by going to bed early and not staying up to watch a show with them or something like that.
