Review of the film Invaders From Mars by Tobe Hooper.

I watch this back when it came on VHS, and I was only a kid, it has only lived vaguely in my memories for all those years, and I only just now found it after many hours of searching for it on Google, based on what I remembered, all I could remember was that people got dragged down through the ground. I’m actually glad that I found out what it is called.

I feel this movie is much better then most people give it credit for. For one thing, it is a nightmare, and in nightmares, things are usually weird and distorted, seldom grounded in reality. That justifies everything being slightly weird and over the top. Second, it is poking subtle jokes at the original film, as well as 50's B movie sci-fi and the 1950's red square, as evidenced by some of the early interactions between David's parents right after the father has been assimilated, but before the mother has. I get the sense watching this that there is a potential commentary on how the 80's Reaganism was trying so hard to return the USA to a 1950's type culture and country, and having studied other Hooper films like the Texas Chainsaw, I am not convinced that this type of subtle subtext is above the director's capabilities as a filmmaker. Overall, this film is not a great masterpiece, but it is an overlooked, fun gem for certain. I would even go as far to say it out performs its 1950's predecessor.
