They probably all shared a betta bowl and went out Toy Story 3 style holding fins.

I can't imagine having that much fish die all at once. I remember the only time I had to return a fish to the store was when the fancy goldfish I bought died in 2 days due to some swim bladder issues.

I use to test the water they returned their fish in and made suggestions on proper tank care. Educated and up sold them where warranted. My boss was confused because we had less transactions for a short period and far fewer returns and asked if the vendor was getting better. I shocked him when I said that I have a “zero genocide” policy and cared about every fish we sold like I was a social worker.

Accessory sales improved and so did our client base because people stopped leaving bad reviews about our fish always dying.

Never tell a customer they are doing something wrong. Simply educate them on what their fish require to live their best life.

That's what our Petco staff tells customers to do to get the return policy! They want you to bring back the frozen dead fish to prove it died.

We had three fish tanks. My stepfather's had all of the iridescent sharks, two of which were very friendly and would swim into your hand, and other more expensive fish. The thermometer broke and killed a ton of them. Then our house burnt down two months later.

Now we don't have any fish, but before the fire, it was the largest single loss. We were heartbroken to lose those two sharks.

The next day they returned a 0.5 galon fishbowl

Probably so "busy" they left the poor things in the bags thinking they could just put them in the tank later

if many die, its usually shock... many fish buyers dont acclimatize their fish... just the temperature alone is a major factor.
if its a new tank, ammonia spike from little to no load to having dozens of fish plus the first feed.

I used to work in a pet store. It takes a certain amount of intelligence to understand water chemistry and the individual needs of the different species of fish. In my experience, most people don't have this intelligence.

Having that many fish die all at once is puzzling. Maybe they didn't treat the water with chlorine remover?🤷‍♀️ In hot weather, a dead fish will decompose and stink quickly. To preserve it, putting it in a zip lock bag and in the freezer is a actually a good idea. 👍

PetSmart's in Las Vegas have absolutely brutal breeders of goldfish and there's always dead fish in the tanks. I had a couple awesome ones from a few years ago but now they are the bringers of death and illness and I completely switched to higher end shops, PetSmart fish brought flukes to my tank last year after probably not quarantining long enough, little Ryukin babies introduced it and killed off some really expensive fish I absolutely adored.

I got some neon tetras from a pet store and the lady getting the fish scooped a bunch up, put them in the bag and then tried to put some back. She skewered my pet fish that I brought with her fake nails. I'll never forget how horrible that was

This is actually really common. My father used to do this too, when the pet store told him to. Most commonly this many fish die at once due to people not acclimating them to the tank water and just dumping the bagged fish into their tank.

As a former employee of a petsmart I can tell you the fish would die a lot . One time we even had a few fish come in without their eyes or have fish eat the eyes of other fish . It was sad

My best friends sister had a huge aquarium with so many beautiful fish, but we live in Erie County, and this last storm knocked out her power for over a day and killed her ENTIRE aquarium. She was so absolutely heart broken.

most petsmart employees literally will tell you to put them in the freezer if you can't make it to the store the same day they died.

Those floating plants take over your aquarium and block the light from above and are so hard to get rid of!
