Official my Butt - I sir hold a youtube doctoral degree in backpacking - with a focus on couch backpacking. I will not certify this kit until almost all of those stuff sacks join the bag of misfit stuff sacks. Integration is important for your gear....gear have feelings. As the ALL in weight? Its all that counts. LOL
Also - I also loved my Whisperer but feared it getting wet and me being screwed.
My soon to be tested replacement is a wind jacket, and not one but 2 Alpha Direct Polar hoodies from Farpoint Gear. The 2 hoodies weigh exactly the same as my hoodless Ghost Whisperer. The cost of 2 is about the same. I use a medium that is 90 gms and layer over that with a large 60 gms. A wind shirt is required for apples to apples comparison but all in I have 3 garments that are slightly more bulky yet easier to pack at about the same weight as a hooded GW. Combined they are way warmer than the GW and separately they are extra, insanely breathable, layers that can fill in when you get soaked - they dry with body heat pretty well.
Of course I am talking at a level beyond your self certification - while you are about to pass the Bar it is important that an "Official" tell you passing the BAR is just a false summit....sorry, sucks for you but after your certification....To reach the top of the top, you have to change your kit - without adding weight - to be better, meaner, including a bear can....yeah you just keep climbing and climbing...Think Scientology...you just keep paying the man in search of a perfection that doesn't exist.
Signed: A guy with a perfect kit that is dumping his tried and true jacket, as well as his perfect tent for tarp camping. Freaking Hotel
California for sure. Keep punching! great kit.

Great video Matty! I just hit that sub 10lb. base weight! I recently purchased a used Zpacks Duplex from someone, which helped me shed that extra weight to get me under the 10, for my ground setup. I am also trying to get to that sub 10lb. base for my hammock setup, but it is difficult. Keep up the great work man, cheers.

I enjoyed this video :)

Thanks ou so much for sharing your set up !
I really like to see other UL backpacker gear :)

Do you already have a review on your tent? I would love to know more about it :)

I am an UL and I do hike with my medium size dog 100% of the time. He doesn’t carry anything.

He has his own inflatable pad ( took a cheap one on Amazon and cut it to his size then re-sealed it with an iron ), along with his own down blanket which served as his sleeping bag.

For more insulation during spring and falls, I put a Mylar blanket under us .

I like that he has his own set up and I have mine.

Needless to say that he sleeps like a champs every night ;)

As for me…I all of My gear!
It took me a couple of years to really get everything that I wanted but worth every penny invested in jt !

Keep up the good work Matty :)

Awesome UL loadout. Which is your all time favourite hike in the canadian rockies?
I am a big fan living in Calgary as well. :) Love your channel.

Well I am an arse. When you pulled out your tent I said “Let me guess, Dursten Xmid Pro” and boom, you shocked me. Have never seen that tent before!! Onto those videos now…. Looking forward to Wandas loadout vid❤

Thank you for sharing your setup. I challenge you to get there for hammocking too. It's entirely possible! I know you have to cater to your broader audience, but don't forget your hammock camping fans! :)

Matty. There is only the weight of one of your bottles on your lighterpack. Also you missed the pack liner as well as the weight of your fuel canister (which isn't consumable as it doesn't fluctuate). How about your phone? The 8oz of the bear can are something most hikers won't have to carry, good on you for including it. Do you really hike in Canada without any rain cover for your legs? No fleece?
Anyhow, rather than focus on the 10lbs mark I would definitely make and effort to get rid of all these stuff sacks and dry bags. You must carry over a quarter pound that are little more than a luxury. Get a rubber band for your food kit, bring a mosquito net to hold your small spare clothes (now you have a mosquito net for free) and replace the rest with two ziplocs. Except the sleeping pad one, which serves no purpose. Fold it so it's against your back which increases comfort.
Thanks for the video.

Is condensation a problem for you with this single-wall tent? And would it be too cold for winter? (I.e., is this just a 3-season tent?)

Is the current UL community consensus to not include food packaging or fuel can (can-only) weight in base weight? Also Ursack's website lists the Major XL's weight as 8.8 oz--new model?

Hi Matty. With the loadout shown in this video, how many days worth of food can you pack in there with you? in the near future, I want to upgrade my 20 year old, 75L osprey pack to something closer to the ULA ohm size.

You forgot to add the 4oz empty fuel cannister. Now over 10lbs. Oops. 😂

Why is no one takes in account for the water on just one side doesn't it ride funky?

Tents are the way to go. No way you can eat in a hammock setup in the wind and pouring rain let alone stay dry with 60mph winds!

Unrelated question: What dog breeds do you recommend for backpacking with?
