Props to Steam to actually show this. There are a lot of companies that wouldn't do this.

I think what they've done is great. A teardown is everything we could wish for, but then they also hint to making replacement parts available? Amazing! I can imagine how they're preparing for people replacing parts and then complaining about stuff like overheating, loose screws, connectivity issues from interference etc. I think it's reasonable for them to put so much emphasis on not to do this yourself.

I have the 512 reserved as I have no intention of swapping drives around but it's nice to know the thumbsticks are easily replaceable and that Valve will provide info on sourcing the parts. Having a few spares on hand will be useful.

Since the housing is absolutely simple to remove I'm excited to see the custom paint jobs people will be doing. I already have a few ideas of my own but I can't wait to see what others come up with.

This is way easier than expected. I thought the drive would have been in a worst location. This is a walk in the park compared to the Sony Walkman I once took appart. :)

It's great to see this. Now as long as replacement parts are available this will be one of the most Right To Repair friendly gaming devices.

on a side note, I like the rainy videogame background you use for your videos! is this a royalty free thing you found somewhere? if so please let me know where!

Keep the steam deck coverage coming. Thanks! Also, don't sell your own teardown skills short. Your work on the Souljaboy console was tight!!!!

Why they're doing the teardown themselves? Because they're advertising to nerds, techies, people who are pro right-to-repair etc. I'm quite happy with this development.

I bought my laptop 8 years ago from a store which had a teardown on their YT channel and invited modding.

It's good to see something like this for future reference, I don't see myself taking it apart anytime close to launch and if I do it'll likely be after others have done so and tested replacement parts

It's a breath of fresh air compared to how other companies do it and they've already scared the competition with the price of this device for the spec it's about time somebody dropped in this and shook it up future looking good.

Personally I don't think it's fear mongering to warn of the potential hazards of taking it apart. I did find it funny that they mentioned ESD damage can occur while not having the grounding strap on right. They did add a little note saying they didn't have it right, I know. I don't know how many videos I've seen on YouTube of teardowns where they're touching IC's with reckless abandon. Catastrophic failure can occur with just a single touch. If I were Valve, I'd probably add if you don't know what a faraday cage is, don't do this.

Correction: the 64GB version *does* use the M.2 slot. It just has a (possibly custom) eMMC drive that goes into the the slot. I always expected this (it just makes more sense financially) but this video was actually the first time that I found them confirming it.

Good thing they included that case huh? I'm ready to swap the NVME drive.

And they said it may look different when inside we get ours. Maybe worst or better? Whom knows.

It's a PC, you can play any game you want on it, from any store, even run any software you want, comes with an open source OS, accessible desktop (KDE Plasma, extremely customisable), can boot any OS you want, access to the BIOS, and they even posted a tear down to show you how to replace the SSD or sticks if you really need to, or ideally a pro needs to do so for you, and will offer replacement parts so you can repair the device rather than needing a new one.. I mean really, this is the **MOST** pro-consumer gaming device EVER.

Bravo Valve, you're showing the competition 'how it should be done'.

7:25 64GB M.2 eMMC exist. Microsoft uses it in their products that come with 64GB of storage as an entry level.

I don't think what they did in with the warning was fear mongering at all. They're a large company with deep pockets and they have to cover their butt there's a lot of individuals who are just trying to take advantage (lawsuit) and say the company encouraged them to do this or said it's okay. I think it on point and it's a great to be as open as they can be because they didn't have to do at all
