Canada has many islands which encompasses those waters. It should definitely go to Canada. Russia's coast however just runs along the waters which they claim so it can be international waters

I think Canada knows if they just don't care whatever the US says and they claim it anyway, the US won't do a thing about it. It's not like the two Nations will go to war over it or cut off trade with each other.

A close relationship with Canada is by far more important to the US than this passage. Especially since it's blatantly obvious the pass belongs to Canada. Not to mention Canada is more popular around the world, and other countries would take Canada's side over the US.

Uh… Canada is in NATO. We Americans already have maritime access to their territory. It benefits us more to acknowledge their claim, and thereby Russia’s, and then dump a ton of military infrastructure into the region to further deter Russian aggression. Also puts more of Russia within striking distance of NATO.

The Northwest Passage is navigable waters with a historical use of the pass. The territory may be Canadian but they shouldn’t be able to charge a fee like it’s the Panama Canal for not doing anything but watching the ice melt. It’s like the straight of Malacca or the strait of Hormuz, or the Bab el Mandeb, free passage to support global trade.
