The Jewish community in Egypt is on the verge of disappearing.
Up until the 1950s, as many as 100,000 Jews called the country home - now, just 12 remain. The BBC's Cairo correspondent Sally Nabil explains why.

That proves what the current Egyptian president said on his second week in presidency "I was raided in a community were muslims, Christians and Jews lived side by side and were good neighbors and friends so what happened?" I really wish to see that good spirit comes back to Egypt and the whole middle east because that is the only way people will be able to face evil and terrorism.

What a horrible thing to do. As an Egyptian, I am ashamed of this terrible act by our former political leaders.

My grandmas family were forced to leave Egypt where they lived for centuries. Some of my family lived in Israel (which was Palestine) but most in Egypt. They had a family there and it was very hard for them to leave. I hope one day that the community will return

As an Egyptian Jewish refugee I find this report very touching.
As to the cemetery it is sad that we have no idea where our relatives are buried.
The marble tombstones were stolen and the Jewish community never kept a map where they were buried.

As to those nasty antisemitic posters who accuse us of being spies, 99.99% of us were loyal citizens who loved Egypt.

As to the other antisemites who mock the Jewish religion and say that Moses never existed the ancient Jews in Egypt clearly existed.

Every morning we Jews pray the Shema Israel since at least 3, 000 years. Jesus also prayed this prayer. In the prayer we thank G-d for having taken us out of Egypt to Israel with Moses.

Clearly it could not be made up.

In addition the Jewish religion has been influenced by Pharaonic Egyptian thoughts.

As an Egyptian, this saddens me more than I can say. Jewish ppl are part of the Egypt’s history and culture. I hope we can gain the diversity and richness of our community that we lost one day.

My grandmother was born in Egypt and was forced to leave after many many many generations of her family there. They didn't believe that a Jew can truly be Egyptian and it honestly breaks my heart. I want to visit so bad but it's not safe:(

The Egyptian Jews should never be force to leave their homes in Egypt. And I am saying all this as a American Muslim. They (the Egyptian Jews) should be welcomed in Egypt.

As an Egyptian I feel deep sadness for the way things turned out. I wish the political leaders at the time was wiser and I wish people was not so naive as to distrust their neighbors so easily and fall victim to propaganda.

Sad reality. Egypt's economic and cultural downfall  began when the Jews started leaving... I hope one day they will come back

Jews actually have a long history in Egypt. I wonder if much of the Western world even knows.

My dads side of the family left Egypt with everything they had around 50 years ago. My grandparents all grew up in Cairo, but they were pretty much forced to leave or be locked up. I’ve never been.
