“Cars are Safe for Women Too” #wait

Показать описание
Cars are primarily tested using male crash test dummies, which likely contributes to the higher risk of injury for women in car crashes. Crash test dummies have historically been designed based on the average male body in terms of height, weight, and biomechanics. As a result, safety features in vehicles, such as seatbelts, airbags, and seating positions, are optimized for male physiology.

This male-centric approach overlooks the fact that women typically have different body structures and sizes, such as a shorter stature, different muscle mass distribution, and a lower bone density. These differences can affect how women experience crashes, making them more vulnerable to certain types of injuries. For example, women are more likely to suffer from whiplash, chest injuries, and abdominal injuries in the same crashes that men might walk away from with less severe harm.

The lack of female-specific crash testing means that vehicles may not be as safe for women as they are for men, despite meeting current safety standards. The disparity in injury risk highlights the need for more inclusive crash testing practices that take into account the diversity of drivers and passengers, ensuring that all people, regardless of gender, have the highest level of protection in a crash.

I feel like a foreign species and didn't even realise it

As a 5'4" woman, I hate head rests. There is no position that feels right.

What are you talking about? I feel completely safe with the seat belt across my neck and the steering wheel packed with explosives inches in front of my face.

My dad was a cop and used to tell me to drive with my seat belt under my arm because it cut across my neck because I'm 5'2. I got pulled over by the state cops and they ticketed me for improper use of a seat belt. I told him last time I was rear ended it nearly crushed my windpipe. He said it didn't matter. I went to court and told the judge that a seat belt is supposed to save your life, not increase the risk to it. He dismissed the ticket, but told me I'd have to find a way to wear it properly. I told him I'd been trying to find something to help, but had yet to find anything.

Now I drive Asian brand cars (Toyota and now kia) and their belts adjust lower

👏👏👏 finally. Women are not small men and deserve proper safety testing.

finally someone saying driving is among the riskiest things we do

I'll never forget the time I was rear-ended by a truck and it actually fixed my neck pain I had for the past week and a half. His insurance was so happy, they cut me a check immediately for the car damages.

And men receive 81% of all DUIs, perhaps because they actually feel safe behind the wheel. Once, a dude told me he drives better drunk than his gf drives sober, I asked him if he just admitted to driving drunk and he confidently said yes. Immediately to my shit list—drunk drivers have killed/harmed people I love.

We have the same problem in healthcare. It's all made for men.
The diagnostic criteria, medical studies, medication etc.

Girls and women get the worst medical care, the most gaslighting,

terrible pain treatment, constant misdiagnosis

We women were never thought about in the past when it came to testing ANYTHING.

Most medicines have studied based on male subjects only

Thank you for talking about this and about how uncomfortable it can sometimes be to sit in and drive a car as a woman. Men are always making jokes about how women get into cars, how we sit, how we drive or operate the vehicle when it was never built for how women move or for their bodies. A few years ago a really good book called Invisible Women was published on how design can be deadly for women. It can make you very emotional as you realise how many fatalities could have been avoided, how many dreams could have been achieved, if only women had been considered in the basic design of everything in the world.

Head rest at the wrong height, seatbelt at the wrong height and don't adjust down low enough. Steering wheel is too big across and pedals are frequently too far away leading to some of us almost standing in our seats to be able to work the pedals.

And can we talk about the f🤬🤬king lumbar support being unadjustable in most seats, too, which ALSO makes the seat uncomfortable.

It's about bloody time someone ACTUALLY starts crash testing vehicles on female proportions. The world is made for men. While this has begun to improve in recent decades, it is very slow going.

I'm glad someone is FINALLY getting around to this with vehicles. It's about dang time.

I seriously thought they were using a national average to determine the build of car crash dummies and shit. Because they HAVE child car crash dummies and adult car crash dummies. WTF wouldn't the adults be calibrated at around the average height and weight of an adult? Like this doesn't make sense regardless of how you look at it. How is this recent and how am I just now hearing about this as someone who recently exited the automotive industry??

This is why female engineers are important.

Coming from a woman who had a neck injury from a bad car accident, I just want to thank you so much for not only respecting biological differences but also making us all aware of the progression in medicine due to them. I've learned a lot about myself and my body from your channel ❤

I found out about this from the book "Invisible women: Data bias", and it really opened my eyes to how society fails women, in everything from healthcare to housing. If you have the time, please give it a read.

I love how you're always looking out for women. Finally a guy to look out for women. Especially a male doctor. Thank you so much!

The seatbelt alone is a thing! Many woman wear bras and since they push the breast together the seatbelt will slip up. Woman have the choice of getting strangled cause it keeps slipping or putting it under the breast giving more space to be flung around and more likely to break a lower rip
Its super annoying having to re adjust every 20 seconds

I’m 4’10” tall, no dwarfism or physiological differences, just a small female body. I don’t drive because I have to push the seat all the way forward to reach the pedals and because I have a very large chest, the wheel actually rubs against my body when I’m steering. All I can think about when driving is how if I get in a front end collision, the wheel might become imbedded in my chest and the explosion from the air bag deploying will bust a hole right through me. I wouldn’t survive.

This is another reason why we need better public transportation and more walkable communities everywhere
