What is MTHFR? – Dr. Berg Explains in Simple Terms

preview_player
Показать описание

Dr. Berg talks about the MRHFR genetic defect and how it affects the MTHFR enzyme. No longer will you be able to fully convert folic acid to its active form (methyl folate). This leads to a chain reaction with
*high homocysteine
*low methionine
*low SAMe
resulting in
1. Inflammation (fibromyalgia)
2. Inability to detoxify (esp. heavy metals and iron)
3. Deficient neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and melatonin. Then comes mood changes (depression and anxiety), and addictive traits (drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes).

Here's what to do
1. Avoid taking folic acid (esp in enriched wheat).
2. Take the methyl folate (B9) form.
3. Take the methylcobalamin (B12) form
4. Avoid gluten
5. Consume dark leafy greens
6. Eat only organic and grass-fed without antibiotics
7. Consume these 2 supplements as well: NAC and Glutathione Reduced to help your detoxification take place.

Also, get testing to rule out your specific genetic detection in the first place.

I just started taking methylfolate and methylcobalamin a few days ago. My brain feels like it's working very different than I'm used to. Anxiety, ADHD, depression, energy levels are much more manageable than they've been in recent years. Hopefully my gut issues clear up in time. So glad to have found out about MTHFR genes that run in my family on both sides.

I have two copies of the MTHFR. I came to understand this at age 66😳. I wish I knew about it a long time ago. I have to understand this to the point of explaining this to my doctor. Most doctors have never heard of this.

I was tested for MTHFR 25 years ago, way before social media. Dr. told me people who have MTHFR have autoimmune like symptoms.

MTHFR can be deficiency or rate limiting factor @ one/more points in the entire Folate cycle. You need availability of ALL Folate cycle metabolic cofactors to address MTHFR effectively. These are ::
1. Folate / MethylFolate / 5MTHF
2. Active B2 / R5P
3. Active B6 / P5P
4. Glycine/Serine
5. Methyl--B12

Folate metabolism is also rate limited by iron & heme metabolism, which in turn depends on availability of B6, B12, Copper, vit C, vit A & Glycine.

And if you are looking at universal methyl donor, you also need SAMe/methionine.

If you are looking to balance methylation, you also need Niacin/B3, which is a methyl group acceptor.

I have been living with this for 52 years now and had no idea until last week. I have been seeking answers from my doctors for decades for all of my on going symptoms throughout my life. Living with this has been a nightmare. Glad i finally have answers and can hopefully prolong my life and my children can be tested, as well.

Thank you for this explanation. I am homozygous for MTHFR. Complicating this problem is the fact that a large portion of my small intestine had to be removed after my appendix burst when I was 7 years old. I take dissolvable B12 and folate, but I don't know whether I am overmethylated or undermethylated now. I wish I had known about all of this before I Iost my short-term memory and felt that I was dying. I did not know my own name, and I couldn't understand written language at all. I was sent to Psychiatry, but I knew this was a physical change, not an emotional issue. I drove myself to a hospital, pointed to my brain and stuttered something, then showed the front desk ladies my license, since I couldn't have spoken my name even if I had remembered it. A deficiency in B12 and folate is serious!

This defect has literally made my life a living hell. I've struggled with all the things Dr. Berg listed for at least 15 years now. I just turned 29 and feel like I'm 70 some days. I do take a methylated B9 and B12 but I forget to take it sometimes... and I can always tell because it helps that much. I believe this gets worse with inflammatory foods. If I take a bite of gluten, it kills me. I highly recommend using activated charcoal too as this will help your body with any toxins but make sure to take 2 hours away from supplements. My safe foods seems to be any meat and cruciferous vegetables. If any of you are really sensitive, I would be sure to watch oxalates. It sucks that we have to sacrifice the foods others can easily eat, but sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do for your health and well-being. Thank you Doc for providing us info on this!

I swear you upload the things I need to hear or a topic that's been brought up, within the same day or the next. I think that qualifies you as a godsend. Keep up the good work Doc!

The book, Dirty Genes, really dials in what MTHFR is, how it gets 'dirty' and then what to do about it. Take a quiz in the book to see if your MTHFR gene is dirty or not. This is a great video by Dr. Berg and happy to see someone else stating that folic acid is garbage! :)

thank you for explaining this because I have this problem and nobody told me about it for years. I have celiac disease, lactose intolerant, pcos, hypothyroidism and heart disease and strokes run in my family. I have been feeling, tired, sick, I've had 5 miscarriages and I've never been able to carry a pregnancy full term. Losing weight has been such a challenge for me and I couldn't figure out why. I don't eat gluten, any grains because they make me sick, no dairy and I'm still overweight, tired, and it's been years since i've felt good.

Genetic testing confirms I have MTHFR and this overview by Dr. Berg is a great "cliff notes" to understanding the complications with good suggestions for supplements to help! Thanks Dr.Berg!

Thank you for this scientific information! We work with Drs. My son's speech and communication skills improved after MTFRH protocol. We do not see any more speech processing problem. He understands verbal speech and talks without delay.
