After a seven-month-long journey, NASA’s Perseverance Rover successfully touched down on the Red Planet on Feb. 18, 2021. Mission controllers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California celebrate landing NASA's fifth -- and most ambitious -- rover on Mars.

A key objective for Perseverance’s mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planet’s geology and past climate, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith.

Also flying with Perseverance is NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter, which will attempt to show controlled, powered flight is possible in the very thin Martian atmosphere.

Observers on Mars: "Oh, no, they're doing it again. Quick, hide the tech."

"This is what we can do as a country"
That is remarkable!
And now imagine what we could do if all countries worked together.

Dude seeing that guy jumping up and down put such a smile on my face. Must be nice to have a job where you can experience that childlike joy again. :)

"My batteries are low, and it's getting dark..."

Now, a new member of the Mars Rover family joins the adventure. Truly incredible.

Real Fact: Ingenuity was one of the names submitted for the perseverance rover by a high school kid, later was named to the helicopter that was attached to the belly of the rover. The ingenuity helicopter is the first powered, controlled flight attempt by humans on another planet.

I wish there was a real video and not just this animation. Why couldn't they record at least the final landing stage?
Edit* Unfortunately we won't get any mars video footage. (I guess) The data would take way too long to be sent to earth. For instance, the Curiosity rover, which landed on Mars in 2012, can only send data back at 32 kilobytes per second.

We landed a rover on Mars in the middle of a pandemic. This is huge. Couldn't have happened at a better time. I can't imagine the energy and effort put into this project over the years of its development. Congratulations 💪
