Thats right I will show you how I extract InDesign pages using this simple script I got over 5 years ago that still works today. Name your files 2-3, 4-5, 6-7 or many other custom options. This allows all those master page settings, Embedded preflight, swatches, and styles to follow your new extracted pages or spreads.

It seems like such a basic/essential feature to me that I don't understand why InDesign itself doesn't already do this.

I tried to buy the extract pages script from Id-Extras, but because I work for a school system I needed documentation from them. They wanted to charge me $100 for a $75 script to fill out a W-9 and write a few sentences saying they wrote the script. Don't bother trying to buy it if you work for a school system!
