Can you have cassava chips on keto? Cassava is very high in carbohydrates. It’s also very high on the glycemic index. Cassava is a starch—it’s a root vegetable. Cassava is also used to make tapioca. Tapioca is not keto-friendly. Another name for cassava is yuca. Cassava or yuca is not keto-friendly.

Cassava also contains very small amounts of vitamin B1 (thiamine). This is a problem because anytime you have something with a lot of carbs and low vitamin B1, you can create a vitamin B1 deficiency. This happens because it takes vitamin B1 to metabolize carbs.

This is a staple food in Nigeria. People are much less overweight there than in the Western World. Actually 90 percent of diet there is mostly carbs, yet people look lean and healthy. I don't think carbs is the problem, refined carbs and process food is the problem not carbs.

When you think about it, God has blessed us with SO MANY different types of food to consume. If you can't eat one thing, there are SO MANY others to choose from that'll replace it and be keto friendly too.
Happy keto people! 😀 ❤️

I grow up on cassava in West Africa! The leaves is also great. My mum usually makes soup 🍲 with the leaves 🍂, and it's good with rice. The leaves is my number one favorite food.

In Latin America it's very common to eat cassava with most things. Cassava, rice, plantain are pretty much staples in most if not every meal. I've cut them for the most part out of my eating habits but they just always seem to sneak their way into other meals.

As always, thanks for the info Dr. Berg!

Keto or not, the cassava chips seem like a good once in awhile alternative to other chips. When you read about cassava they seem to have a lot of health benefits

It may not be keto, but I'm not trying to lose weight; many people like me are gluten sensitive or celiac and have to go completely grain free so that only leaves us with cassava flour and almond flour. Always take into account your specific dietary needs when taking nutrition advice.

Here in Brazil cassava is common in our cousine, so is tapioca, and we make pão de queijo out of cassava flour, which is the delicious and pretty adictive type of cheesy bread ! We love EVERYTHING that comes with cassava and different types of its preparation, but I am absolutely sad it's not keto! I would trade all the potatoes of the world for cassavas in my diet !

My wife is in denial that yuca is nothing but starch. And she is on denial too seeing the 73 lbs lost off of me this past year in avoiding wheat, rice, sugars, corn and starchy foods like yucca. She’s gained like 20 lbs (again, she denies the person she sees in the mirror). Can’t win them all!

In all seriousness though nutrition needs to be taught at home. Like both my wife and myself, we were taught to do repeats from moms high carb/low protein meals. I am not denying there is nothing like moms cooking, but in our hispanic culture diabetes, high blood pressure and cancers run rapid and ultimately catch up to is as we begin to enter late stages in life.

Began my lifestyle change 12 months ago at 45 years old due to high blood pressure and obesity. Bloodwork came back as borderline pre diabetes. Eat about 10 cups of veggies a day. About 150 grams of protein (lots of chicken, red meat, fish, eggs and bacon) a day. Exercise 30 mins a day (walking or jogging). BP is down to 110/65. Will be doing another blood work soon but my doctor is very pleased and supportive of my meals and lifestyle changes.

Say no to foods like yucca - nutritionally void of anything which is why they are so cheap to buy.

Dr. Berg.... can you do a video on major G.I. disorders such as gastroparesis? I’m shocked how common these are. So many of us are just suffering because we are not getting accurate details on how to live with these horrible disorders. Much thanks!

Big issue I see, is the fact it creates the B1 deficiency. B1, along with zinc, are needed by the body to absorb necessary vitamins.
