'Miracle' Rescues, But Hopes Dim More Than Four Days After Quake In Turkey | Ground Report

Rescuers were racing against time on Friday, scouring debris nearly 100 hours after a massive earthquake hit Turkey and Syria, killing at least 24,000 people in one of the region's worst disasters for a century. The death toll continues to rise amid widespread devastation and cold, hunger and despair gripped hundreds of thousands of people left homeless by the tremors.

Several people trapped under the rubble were rescued during the night, including a 10-year-old boy saved along with his mother after 90 hours in the Samandag district of Hatay province. Also in Hatay, a seven-year-old girl named Asya Donmez was rescued after 95 hours and taken to hospital, the state-owned Anadolu news agency reported. But hopes were fading that many more would be found alive in the ruins of thousands of collapsed buildings in towns and cities across the region.

The first UN aid deliveries arrived on Thursday in Syrian rebel-held zones. Several countries, including India, have sent aid and relief materials to Turkey and Syria. Watch India Today for all the latest updates.
