Not only has she been dealing with so much pain from others, but her mom has been treating her so badly because of it. I felt so disgusted at the beginning of the clip

I'm so glad that the mom was able to project her sadness, regret, and understanding in the last few moments of that clip. To let her daughter know that she was on her side in this.

I feel so bad for this poor girl. She's so young and she's feeling all this pain around her everyday in the most literal sense and because it's rare and not as widely known, almost everyone, including her mother and herself, think that she's either crazy or bad when she is neither. She was in pain, she didn't know why, and she got all the blame for it.

To all the people who think I'm confusing acting with real life, I'm not. I'm not talking about the actress, I'm talking about the character. Just so you understand.

I’m just glad the mom ended up actually caring and putting her daughter first in the end.

I swear to god if in this clip they say it’s mirror mirror synesthesia, I will blow with excitement; I have been studying synesthesia for months.

Living with this condition must be terrible, my sympathies to everyone who deals with it.

I just realized how difficult a condition like this could make having healthy arguments with loved ones. Imagine Ariel, perhaps a little older, having a lovers' spat with her boyfriend. Regardless of who's more at fault, she's going to be feeling her boyfriend's anger on top of whatever anger of her own she may be feeling. So when she reaches the point where she might otherwise start cooling down and becoming more conciliatory, unless the boyfriend reaches that point at the same time, her condition may just turn her boyfriend's remaining anger into a positive feedback loop. She mirrors his anger, causing her to act angrily, which only pisses him off more, and so on. Unless she's sufficiently adept at the coping techniques, she may not be able to help escalating the situation even when she actually wishes she could de-escalate it.

I am diagnosed with mirror-touch synesthesia, and I find it rather funny how extremely exaggerated it is portrayed here, at least compared to my cases and the ones I know. In the cases I know it's much more subtle but has a big impact on our life. It's not always bad; we tend to be very good listeners, though for example most of us would rather go broke a thousand times than be doctors, because of the amount of pain we would have to endure. One specific thing I've realized, for example, is how I'm often uncomfortable in circus performances since watching the effort of the acrobatics makes me terribly sore.

This is fascinating. I never even heard of this condition. I can see the pros and cons of having a condition such as this. The human brain. Always evolving for the selected few.

At least the mom recognized her mistakes and wanted to do better

Idk how medically legit this is but I’m glad the point was the mother having more empathy for her daughter

Dang. Something that forces her mother to be a better person so her daughter can have a better life. On one level, I do feel bad for the girl, having to feel all that pain around her and am thankful for the doctor who helped her out. On the other hand...that mom needed the reminder.

I can often tell when someone I'm near is in pain and have been able to feel a few times when when someone had intense emotion. It's mainly the feel sensation like a tingling numbness in that certain area that's ailing someone. I usually can tell when my dad's knee is giving him issues, for example, because I can feel it too or say someone is complaining about their arm hurting, I can point out the exact area on myself.

For anyone who has this in real life, i hope you stay far away from trauma centers, people with drug addictions, high crime areas, etc. I cannot even imagine the things youd feel..

This is one of my favourite episodes of the show. You never want to see a young person have a mental illness, it’s worse when it’s your own child.

This condition makes the person feel extreme empathy.

I always wondered what was wrong with me because I felt more deeply than other people. I could see it on their faces and feel it in my heart. I've carried out my entire life. Maybe not to this degree but I'm so glad that they're showing this. I am not crazy after all

If Ariel has mirror-touch synesthesia (he slaps his left cheek she feels it on her right cheek; his left knee hurts so her right knee hurts) then how come the left side of her forehead hurt same side as her mother's?

The human brain is such a complicated and interesting puzzle. Such an unusual condition. So fascinating!
