These are so common. In my poorly-educated days my first hamster had one. As a consequence he had broken claws and his feet were sometimes bleeding a little. I feel guilty that we didn't take better care of him, but all I can do now is look after my current hamster properly. Jack loves his playpen time, especially if I sprinkle some oats around for him to gather!

I wish I knew this when I had a hamster! People normalize the worst ways to take care of small rodents.. It makes me sad. I’m glad there are people who make sure theyre taken care of properly!

Instead of a ball, you can literally do something as simple as a bathtub with a towel on the bottom and toys with a wheel. It isn’t that hard people

Same as with small cages, im amazed these are still being sold..
Its depressing so many people seem to buy hamsters without even bothering to find out how to look after them. Vidoes like yours are so valuable to new, and not so new owners.

It's its side most people keep there little hamsters in such small cages.

I just let my hamster play in the tub. No water obviously. It's perfect because the hamster can't climb out and it's easy to clean

I used to have hamster balls. I used to think anything at a pet store was OK.
I’m so glad there are ways to know better now.
Even tho the best way would be for stores to sell safe items only

Thanks for making a short! I was trying to explain to my cousin why hamster balls aren’t safe, and she wasn’t buying it. So, I sent this to her, and she threw away the ball!

My hamster Derek died on Friday. I didn’t notice any signs of illness, but she was 3-4 y/o (she was a rescue and we didn’t really know her age but she wasn’t young). She was adorable and so sweet. I loved it when she would stuff her little cheek pouches with loads of food and they would each be about the size of her head 😂. I don’t get why she had to die. I still burst into tears a lot. I want her back. I want to cuddle her.

I have another hamster called bubbles and she is so cute and fluffy and adorable and she comes out and asks for cuddles at the gate (she knows how to get us to pick her up) it’s so sweet 😭 I love bubbles. She is the cutest. She’s so fluffy and cute and adorable 😭 😁

Other than that, I have 3 gerbils (bear, Casper, pumpkin) and 2 rats (crumble, Futengurg)

1 turtle (Mr T)
4 dogs (pippin, mooshoo, gnipper, Megan)

My first experience with a hamster was when I was doing air monitoring in a school and a hamster rolled up to in one of these. It was pretty unexpected as I had no real experience of small pets outside of cages. This was long before I started watching YouTube videos and rediscovered hamsters (how did I forget hamsters have pouches?!). By then I realized that hamster balls were no longer used. Thank you for all the great information (and memories)!
