I feel the acceptable version of this is if the date rings up a huge tab by ordering the most expensive things on the menu then dips. In that case, it’s pretty obviously intentional conduct rather than just them leaving a bad date

I took a friend's friend out to a super fancy dinner and were supposed to split the bill. I ate about $200, she ate and drank about $1100, she ghosted before we got the check. Damn right I took her to small claims court, this was apparently a hobby of hers, she just forgot she wasn't supposed to do it to me.

Edit, sorry I didn't mention it in the comment, yes I won, got the money for the bill and court costs covered.

Few decades back, but did a small claims against a dodgy business that didn't take refunds on unopened products though they posted they did. Brought the receipts which had the refund limitations (30 days). Felt good to have the decision fully in my favor.

Heard a rumor when it comes to suing large corporations in small claims that you'll likely get a visit by a lawyer with a settlement check and an NDA soon after filing.

If someone ditches you with the check, it wasn't you that was the bad date.
Guaranteed no one is going to look at the ditcher and say "gee this person must be a fine upstanding person, therefore they must have a very good reason".

Hi, small claims plaintiff here, if you win the case then the court makes the defendant pay you back for all court costs in addition to the amount you were suing them for

Edit: THIS DEPENDS ON YOUR STATE!!! From my experience, it was never even thought of that the defendant isn't required to pay for all of the court costs when the plaintiff wins, since that seems like such an obvious thing to do. However, it has been concluded that some other courts stupidly don't make the defendant responsible for the court costs upon ruling in favor of the plaintiff.

Remember people. Servers can be your friend. You can tell them at the desk you want to pay for your meal and leave a bad date. You cant get sued because you covered your half. Keep the receipt.

Honestly it depends, if my date left me after ordering a $1000 meal, you know I would be taking them straight to court
