My daughter is a CFO of a large company and works 50-60 hours a week. Since my husband passed away a year and a half ago I find I don’t make good wholesome meals for myself. So I decided to make two meals a week for her and her family. I have done this for over a year now. Good meals for them and good nutritious meals for me! A win win for us all!

I thank God I was raised by grandparents who survived The Great Depression. I treasure the lessons and memories they taught me.

I am 78 and had 5 children and I often say I had more time less stress when I had all these children to look after than I do now, I was brought up by my grandmother who had lived through 2 world wars (I live in the UK) and she was frugal said I had no right to buy things that I could make and "that haste makes waste" so I cooked sewed knitted did DIY decorating you name it my Gran showed me how, I cooked everything from scratch (still do) and still had time to spend one afternoon a week visiting my father-in-law and another afternoon my own mother, I had no car (I can't drive) was always pushing a small child in a pram, meal times you had to have a very good reason you were not sitting at the table for tea, were we all talked about our day and what we had done, and my children all had to help clear the table and take it in turns to wash up, and we were a very happy family and have always supported each other, and in those days times were hard, but we managed.

Whenever I use a crockpot I think of my mom. My dad was friends with the vice president of the company that makes crockpots in the early 70's. He knew my mom worked outside the home and asked if she would give her opinion on a new cooking device, the crock pot. My mom reported back she loved it. Years later when I left home, crockpot recipes from her were in my bag. So they did their research with real people. Cool, huh?

I guess mine would be chicken, mashed potatoes and sweet corn. With a slice of bread and some milk to drink!

When I was growing up (MANY years ago, lol), my Mother had a rule of “the tv is off while we eat our meal”. I still think that is a great rule for families…they will talk more to one another.

I have a theory about how the evil “multi-tasking” came into our lives. I am guessing that we are roughly about the same age, Emmy, (I’m 58) and so you will understand these references. Our generation still had Moms that were almost all full time homemakers; in the first seven years of my schooling, with almost forty kids in each class, only one mom (a nurse) worked. So we had that influence, but being in school for all of the 1970’s told us that “women can do/have if ALL”. We all fell into that “Supermom” trap, but luckily I have a family that has no problem with me being imperfect. Some days - even though the floors may need to be swept and washed - I would spend the day outside playing with my kids. They were always my number one, and I didn’t mind doing some housework at night after they went to bed. I love your videos - blessings to you and Paul!

Not frugal but my comfort food is Chinese take out. It makes me think of a fluffy throw, warm pajamas, snuggled up on the couch, with a glass of wine, a cheesy chic flick, and eating right out of the Chinese take out container and playing hooky from life.

When my mother was into needlepoint she made The hurrier I go the behinder I get. She framed it and it hung on our wall for many years. I still have it, packed away. I should get it out and hang it again as a reminder to enjoy slow living during these hectic times. Blessings to you.

I have to tell you about one of my husband’s finds. When he goes to our local recycling center to drop ours off, he saw a kitchen aid mixer just like yours! It was sitting on the ground outside a dumpster. He asked one of the workers about it, and the guy said he was welcome to it! It had most of the attachments in the bowl, and even the metal bowl! We’ve always wanted one but we wouldn’t buy it. Now we have one!

A house, esp kitchen tidy up is critical for my mental well being the next morning. Waking up to a dirty kitchen is like getting up on the wrong side of the bed for me 😉
I’m working on embracing a simpler life. My life didn’t get complicated over night, it’s going to be a process, but I’m on my way ❤️
Thank you for helping me on this journey

The harrier I go, the behinder I get was also hanging in my grandparents kitchen. Love it! So true.

I am so grateful that my Grandmother, who survived but never recovered from the Depression raised me for my most critical years. I still do things she did. I PREFER to listen to a baseball game, though today, in English, not French, because I use my mind to visualize what is going on. I sew with no radio or television, only the clicking of the sewing machine for music. I love playing with my beautiful service dog, Nike, and will spend much time watching her run and chase the toys I throw for her. I LOVE the smells of roasting vegetables, simmering soups and home-baked bread. I use a fountain pen to write personal notes to my loved ones, and I make soap and candles that perfume my house and my bathroom. You are absolutely right. Our lives have been cheapened by electronics, and how many times do I lament seeing people walking around the amazing rose gardens here with their eyes on their cell phones! I want to shake them until their heads rattle!

I smiled thinking about the limited schedule on television. We’d get up super early on Saturday mornings and stare at the test pattern until the National Anthem played, then a devotional sponsored by the local cemetery just waiting for the cartoons to come on. Fun slow times of the 50’s and early 60’s.

I'm a South Carolina girl, so I love to hear that you found collards down here and enjoy them. Most people outside the south cook them quickly, but we cook them for hours to make them really good and tender. Any smoked meat will season them--a leftover ham bone, ham hocks, even turkey necks. You did a great job, but you could have gone ahead and added the rest of the collards to the slow cooker once they cooked down just a little bit. Once you start eating them, you always wish there were more!

My favorite comfort food is homemade spaghetti and meatballs. My mom used to make this every Sunday. I only make it once a month now because if I ate it every week I’d have to keep buying bigger clothes, which isn’t very frugal! 😁

Emmy, I have a funny story for you about meal time. My young grandsons come from a very hectic household. They never eat at the table. So when they were little, I made a point of always sitting at the table when they came to our house. One time they balked it this and wanted to sit in front of the TV. I said, "No, we are going to sit at the table like civilized people." Well, did that come back to haunt me!! They told their mom, my daughter-in-law, that they had to start eating like civilized people!! WOW. I'm so lucky that my DIL understood the intent of my words and didn't take it as a comment on her parenting! We have laughed about it many times.
