I find it interesting how closely this parallels the belief in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints about the post-mortal spirit world, were our souls go after death, and were many have the opportunity to learn Jesus Christ's gospel and repent before their final judgement. Mortals on earth can also aid by performing vicarious ordinances (like baptism) for these souls, which they can choose to accept of deny. Even though it's so similar, Catholics still don't consider Latter-day Saints Christian. Kind of funny if you ask me.

It is not unique to Catholics. Hebrews believed. 2 Maccabees 12: 40 - 46. If everyone who dies goes immediately to Heaven or to Hell, then this verse would be nonsense. Those who are in Heaven have no need of prayer, "that they may be loosed from sins"; those who are in Hell are unable to benefit from such prayers, because there is no escape from Hell—damnation is eternal.

Thus, there must be a third place or state, in which some of the dead are currently in the process of being "loosed from sins."

Sadly this isnt true. Some people have died and saw god or jesus. they told people who returned that this is a lie from the devil. One particular man was surprised he had many sins that were minor but god forgave them, so this type of thing is not necessary. Its the major ones like stealing, killing, idols, envy, adultery, fornication ect that are major sins that needs us to ask forgiveness for because these we can willingly do, so god sees it as something we wanted to do.
