#6 - How To Keep Your Mind From Wandering in Prayer

Many people struggle with a wandering mind in prayer. In this episode Eric and Daniel discuss keys to keeping the attention focused on Christ.

I like how Jeanne Guyon teaches this because in her book "Experiencing the Depths of Jesus Christ" she talks about how it's not always easy to keep your mind on Him and that it will almost certainly be hard at first for most people but the key is to never stop turning to Him every time you realize your mind wandered.  She says to not condemn yourself because your mind just wandered, but to realize it happened and to happily turn back to Him.  I certainly like Eric Gilmour and just subscribed to his Youtube channel but in this aspect he's not able to realize how truly difficult it can be for some people to keep their own attention focused for any length of time.  As Jeanne Guyon says you have to keep at it and train yourself to just keep turning back even if its 100x's in one time of fellowship.  Eventually it becomes easier and easier until you find it hard to not think upon Him even when your doing other things.  All praise be to our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

What helps me give God my attention is muting my phones. No music nothing just saying thank you God. I love you God. Think about the words your saying as you say them. Take your time and continue. Good loves us, we’re perfect in his eyes. We have the authority and power over this thing. This blessed me! Stay focused guys!

I have years of new age meditation practice which helps me now to bring my mind back to Jesus....at least I got one good thing out of that movement.

I find that it can be easier to keep your mind focused if I you out in the backyard and look up to the sky while praying. You are alone with Him with minimal distractions around you. With me it is easier to be focused if my eyes are open and looking up rather than closed. The small amount of visual stimulus seems to help keep my mind from wandering. Scripture tells us that our Lord Himself looked up to heaven when He prayed. When I look at the sky above I think of the One Who made it.

No offense to Eric here, but those of us with brain damage and focus deficits have great difficulty maintaining attention on anything. I have to first ask God to keep my mind stayed on thee and for help focusing my attention on Him. Ironic, isn't it? I even need God's help to worship Him. Praise God He is faithful every time. I am happy for Eric though, that this isn't one of his personal struggles.

You touch the exact topics that I wanted answers for I’ve been so angry when it comes to making decisions with the voices in my head especially while praying and my mind is all over the place and I think am the only one who was feeling this way I thank you so much for this discussion now I can’t spread the words and feel more relief Thank you lord

You don't know how much I needed this Daniel. I couldn't understand how I could love God more from the beginning of my walk because I just didn't feel like I felt God until someone explained that that weighty feeling was the Holy Spirit. And just the same, I needed this to show me why and how to worship....and why it's to my benefit. Keep up the good love you hug for you and Eric!!

we agree just to be! Since we have learned that God chooses us to bear fruit, the fruit that lasts so perfect practice makes perfect. Jesus suffered so we could give thanks for how He is with us at every appointment even when we are disappointed with the outcome, since we are being shaped by the Supreme expert who knows the template is exactly unique so the trophies are alive and are in alignment, The work that HIS goodness began, the arm of HIS strength will complete!
