I disagree about letting them get 100% dry and doing the taco test. If you are letting your hoya get this dry, it'll kill of some roots. They are not cactus. This could be why you think they are slow growers.

Thank you so much for putting this video together! It was so informative. I’ve never even heard of spraying my Hoyas with fertilizer because they can absorb it through contact with the leaves. That’s so interesting.

Your pots are so cute

If you have the right set up for Hoyas… 💡☀️
A healthy cutting will have roots within a month… 🌱
A healthy cutting will have new growth within 2 months 🌱
They grow fast if they have the right conditions…. 🌱🪴
Most will need a trellis within half a year, they are that fast…. 🪴
Many can actually bloom within a year 🌸

Care importance 1
- good light
- proper watering (not letting the soil dry out completely, no taco test, keep the soil moist but not wet)
- humidity (some are fine out in the room, some need 60% or even higher humidity)
Hoyas are from areas where it rains a lot, they need water…
By the time the soil has dried out or when you can taco test, most Hoyas will have dried out roots. When you water again those roots will rot (dryrot). This means the plant has to put energy into making new roots before it can grow = slow growth

When you get the light and watering/humidity right you are halfway there

Care importance 2
- substrate mix (adjust the substrate to your watering so that they don’t dry out or stay wet)

Care importance 3
- fertilizing (weakly weekly works great as well)
- trellising (some Hoyas need to climb)
I didn’t fertilize in my first year of growing them they still grew well and some even bloomed. After fertilizing they did grow better and more of them flowered 🌸🌸🌸
Personally I don’t foliage fertilize… my Hoyas grow fast and many of them have bloomed, so while it may help, its not “needed”

I agree with pots on the smaller side…
Rootbound is never a good thing though.. it will be difficult to give the plant a larger pot when it is needed if it was rootbound in its previous pot.
I like to let the roots touch the outside of the pot, they can come out at the bottom, but they cant start circling around or fill the whole pot.

Other things
- many Hoyas don’t have stiff leaves
- as fas as I know Hoya leaves become thin because of underwatering/root problems, not because of they are in bloom…. They will bloom sometimes though when they think they are going to die
- Hoyas will root all over the stem, not just at the node, so when cutting, a long stem is beneficial, the node doesn’t have to be in the water/substrate for a Hoya to root

I’m glad you did this video because I have a Hoya that has not bloomed in like four years, and I have a little red stem coming up which looks like what was on your plant, so I’m hoping that’s a peduncle, great information thank you

Excellent video with good information and tips. Many thanks for putting this video together. Although I get a lot of information on line, I use my experience with my plants in my environment to care for my plants. Some of my Hoyas follow the general rules but there are exceptions. Since I’ve lost some Hoyas due to dry root rot, I’m no longer letting my Hoyas dry out totally and so far it’s working in my environment. Seems “one size does not necessarily fit all” in the Hoya world. 😵‍💫. Love this genus and I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Your Hoyas are gorgeous! 👌🪴🥰

If the soil is chunky or wait until it’s mostly dry to water vs 100% dry and that seems to make them very happy. If they are wrinkly that means I waited too long. I put mine in clear pots so I can look at the moisture level.

I bought my hoya Wilbur Graves from Jax’s Jungle back when she had her storefront, she has a website and is on Palmstreet I would recommend sending her a message to see if she has any available. The one I had has gotten big with the best silver genetics 🤩

Enjoyed your video. Would love a video on Eurphobias. What soil mix do u use for hoyas? I'm trying coco coir, coco chips and perlite. I'm finding the cactus and succulent mix with orchid bark are not happy with.
I'm also experiencing wrinkled leaves on hoyas even when they're hydrated.
