Why don't all watches have this feature? 🤔 (Hacking vs non-hacking)

Its surprising that not every mechanical watch has a HACKABLE or Stop-Second movement which is useful for synchronizing time to another clock or watch.

Hey 👋🏼 just want to clarify the time setting

“Does setting time backwards damage the Watch?”

In general you should only set the time in CLOCKWISE direction, but in this video you’ll see me kickback the minute hand very slightly (no more than 5 mins and nowhere near 12 o’clock for date change watches) to stop or slow down the seconds hand.

From my personal experience I have never had any issues and many people already accidentally kickback the minute hand when they go to naturally set the time so I don’t see this method being an issue on modern watches.

I’m quite certain Watch manufacturers account for small operating mishap when assembling their movements.

Nowwww that being said - I would not do it on a vintage watch or highly complicated watches just to be safe.

Hope that clears things up! Thanks for the feedback 👍🏼

I think that it should definitely be included, especially on high end watches like Patek and VC

Man, that Cartier has seen the war lol

I think it's crazy that some high-end watches lack this feature.

The explanation I once heard is that hacking seconds have traditionally been considered a military function, and that watch companies that never made mil-spec watches therefore never had to incorporate hacking seconds. Over time, hacking seconds came to be seen as almost "plebeian" compared to the movements used in haute horology. But I could be totally wrong, of course.

I asked my father for a 30USD casio and he bought me a 250USD seiko. I cannot be more grateful. (Just so yall know we live in India and it is considered damn expensive here)

So I don't understand why all watch brands can't just do what Panerai did with the P.1000 movement in the PAM00574 which zeroizes the second hand to 12 automatically instead of me just waiting up to a minute for the seconds hand to land somewhere near/on the 12

“Hackable movement “ - such extravagant terminology for this simple function is equivalent to saying “ orchestrated bank heist” when stealing a biscuit from your own dogs plate😂

Yes all watches are time keepers and should by definition be able the synchronize the time to a reference point.

Yes. I am a stickler for precision in timekeeping, so a hacking movement is a must!

Yes, hacakable helps to know if watch is working within +/- 5 secs daily.
My non hackable watches are cheap or old watches and there is no point synchronising. Still I use those 2 methods. It's fun.

That Cartier - did you scrape it on sandpaper or something?? 😂

Thanks for a clear and concise explanation in less than a minute. I watched 4 videos that wasted the first minute for introductions and did a terrible job at explaining this.

Honestly, when I see luxury watches with a 42 hour power reserves or non-hackable seconds, it makes me lose respect for their brand. They will charge you 20k for movements that are better in a thousand dollar watch

3rd method: Flick the watch from the wrist to make the balance spring vibrate just the moment the seconds hand shows the correct second, then quickly wind the watch to keep it going, then set hour and minute. Works like a charm.

quickset date and hacking second are a MUST in any mechanical watch especially the ones that cost fortunes..

All it involves is a lever that touches and stops the balance wheel. Yes, this certainly should be a feature on all modern movements.

Have never thought about that. Thanks for sharing. But personally, I don't care. These movements have 2-3 seconds discrepancy per day at best. Can't be bothered to sync it to that precision. If I need that precision I go for my phone.

I like hackable seconds. Its fun to set the time to atomic and see how close the watch is at the end of the week. It doesnt really matter if it doesnt tho.

Terminology clarification - I might be wrong, but I think it’s “hacking” rather than “hackable”. The complication is known as “hacking seconds” or having a “hack”. And yes, all watches should have this, especially expensive ones. It’s a very small part and not complicated at all. Cheers!
