A year ago I purchased a beautiful walnut slab from third coast and did the same build it turned out really nice, used the same process, but added the ceramic finish after the Rubio set up, it gave it extra sheen and protection. Great information, thanks.

Nicely done sir. You might try using a flex shaft Dremel tool with a Kutzall burr to remove the punk wood. Also, if that doesn't go deep enough for you you can get a piece of same size steel rod and weld it to the burr shaft. You can extend the burr that way to any practical length you might want.
