Story six: Is autism catching? Based on the conversation it sounds like Grandma may be a carrier. To be clearer, that kind of tactlessness is one indicator that a person is on the spectrum, so OP should ask herself if the reason Grandma is so hard to deal with may be an undiagnosed and untreated mental condition.

When Grandma was young what we now call autism was not a recognized thing. She was probably punished and overcorrected with physical discipline that would twist any child. I'm not saying OP should be apologetic, but we might all be missing the impact of parenting that would be considered child abuse today.

I had a friend in elementary school in the early 1960s whose father tried to correct his "deviant" behaviour by beating it out of him. Today I understand he had a learning disorder; he was dyslexic and possibly autistic as well. We need to remember that we live in far more enlightened times than that so called "Golden Age" when the Biblical maxim of spoiling the child by sparing the rod was the norm.
