In this episode were taking real world landscapes and importing them to unreal engine using height maps. A great source for these is terrain party, but its not always working, so here we use an alternative Tangrams heightmapper.

Height maps are greyscale images that use their intensity to display elevation gradients. We can use these images in UE4, and use the world composition editor to create massive detailed landscapes with minimal effort.

I like how you don't assume everyone knows what you're talking about. Very well done tutorials.

Good afternoon, thank you for the videos and for the useful sites. Only I have a question, why use GIMP, cut the photo into 4 parts? I took the height map from tangrams and added it to the unreal, played with the scale there, and that's it. So will the terrain be more detailed, or why?

If I understood this correctly, I have to scale my whole game smaller just to get bigger mountains?! What a mess..

landscape in unreal 5 still sucks. it use greyscale in a relative/artistic way, and can not obtain the accurate elevation in real world data, like geotiff.
