Nikon D4S | Auto Focus Field Test with Sports Illustrated photographer Robert Beck

Sports Illustrated photographer, Robert Beck shares his view about the Nikon D4S's ability to track fast-moving subjects over long distances.

'I didn't think there was a system that could pick up something you couldn't see, and in a millisecond, lock on, get it in focus and then track it through the air.' - Robert Beck

Nikon D4S's Group Area AF tracks fast-moving subjects over long distances with phenomenal precision. Group Area AF mode constantly monitors five different AF fields, offering improved acquisition and background isolation when shooting subjects that are comparatively small and close to a high-contrast or distracting background. The five-point AF area can be shifted across the 51-point array as composition demands.

Still a perfect camera in 2021, I sold the Nikon D5 again because the image quality didn't convince me. The Nikon D4 and D4s are great.

@Photone Photography: Are you talking about an issue you experienced with the D4 or D4S?

No need for you need to spend 7 grand on a Z9 . Still using D4S and D850 nothing wrong with them .

There is a common problem with Nikon D4. The multi-selection buttons fall off. This supposed to be the most robust flag ship camera... Lame !!! And, Nikon (Canada) asks $283 to fix it and give your camera back! They make $283 from a $2 rubber button (which is not supposed to fall off even after years), but lose reputation for bad customer relationship, and leave a bitter taste and frustrated customers behind.

You can catch and focus on your subject if you have a focus button...
